Bravos season to begin Thursday

The Sabetha Bravos — Sabetha’s new summer collegiate baseball team — will open their season next week against the Kansas City Monarchs at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 30, in Sabetha. The Sabetha Bravos home games are held at Wilbur Bestwick Field at Somerset Park in Sabetha. These games are free to the public.

The Sabetha Bravos team replaces the former Sabetha Lobos. The Bravos will be a part of the Mid-Plains League. The team is being coached by Enrique Alfonso Gomez — a professional baseball pitcher in Venezuela and the United States — and former Lobos player Edgar Santos.

“I had the experience of participating in the summer league in Sabetha in 2017,” Santos said. “In 2018, I found out what had happened with the previous team, and the bitter taste that had been left in Sabetha by the mismanagement of the person in charge of the baseball team. I was aware of all the rules broken by players and team leaders, which did not meet the expectations in the community.”

Santos said he saw the opportunity to build a new program in Sabetha, which will hopefully integrate the players into the community and will be able to continue for years to come.

Players

There are eight players returning to Sabetha, who played previously on the Sabetha Lobos team. Those players are pitcher José Marroquín, catcher Carlos Reynoso, infielder Diego Martinez, infielder Vinicio Samayoa, and pitcher Diego Martínez, all from Guatemala; pitcher Michael Colon and outfielder Eddie Pimentel, both from Puerto Rico; and pitcher Reiner Mendez, from Venezuela.

New players include infielder Cesar Paz and pitcher Jordan Salazar, both from Texas; pitcher Alexis Avendaño and outfielder Ivan Medina, from Venezuela; infielder Carlos Tovar, from Europe; infielder Sergio Barrios, outfielder Xavier Juarez, pitcher Estuardo Amado, outfielder Edgar Tecu, outfielder Julio Sandoval, pitcher Jonathan De León, and infielder Steven Oliva, all from Guatemala; infielder Brandon Brewer, from Wisconsin; and pitcher Daisuke Yasui, from Japan.
