Sheriff supports local petition
I would like to make the public aware of a local person circulating a petition to lower the speed limit from 65 miles per hour (mph) to 45 mph on U.S. Highway 36 in the location known as the Wal-Mart curves, west of Hiawatha. We are in full support of this petition. I have had many, many complaints from our local citizens about near miss head on collisions at that location.
Numerous complaints about vehicles going left of center trying to maneuver the curve at 65 miles per hour. Motorists voicing concerns about almost being rear-ended trying to turn on to Oregon Street, Wal-Mart or Skyview.
We have had fatal accidents, semis overturning loaded with livestock, accidents, vehicles leaving the roadway unable to maneuver the turn and other issues in this location due to the unsafe speed limit. A suggested speed limit of 45 mph is recommended at this location, but it is not enforceable.
A white sign with the black number 45 implemented by Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) would make this an enforceable action, and that is what is going to be asked of KDOT by way of this petition.
I always commend the public for getting involved in safety issues that our community is facing. Glenda Foley has taken on this very worthwhile project and has collected a good amount of signatures. If you would like to sign this petition, you may contact her at 785-742-3757, or drop by the Brown County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center as we have a copy that you may sign.
