Alumni Reunion: Goff High School
Submitted by Virginia Cook
The Goff High School Alumni reunion was attended by 46 alumni and guests on Sunday, May 26, at the Goff Community Building hosted by the class of 1958. The tables were decorated with white tablecloths, green place mats and white roosters, which were given away as door prizes.
The Pledge of Allegiance and Invocation was followed by a delicious lunch catered by the Corn Crib Catering of Corning. After lunch, the meeting was called to order by Virginia Sourk Cook, presiding. Several alumni reminisced about school days at Goff.
Dorothy Hawley Edwards conducted roll call, which revealed the eldest alumni in attendance was Wilma Stoldt Ross from the class of 1948. The class of 1949 celebrated their 70th year class reunion and had three graduates attending — Frank Leslie, Donald Lowry and Roy Bell.
The letter from Trudy Rainey Odle stated her mother, Sarah Sourk Rainey, class of 1937, our oldest living alumni, will be 100 years old in November and is in assisted living. Rainey was a teacher at Goff Grade School for several years before moving to Topeka, where she retired from Shawnee Heights School District. She was voted Master Teacher of the Year twice in her 17-year career in that district.
Memorial Service for graduates deceased since May 2018 was conducted by Ruth Carlson Heuer. Alumni honored and their graduation class were as follows: William Gleason, class of 1943; Darlene Burkholder Marten, class of 1947; Dale Massek, class of 1949; Ernest Hoppe, class of 1951; Dorothy Vernon Legere, class of 1955. Nancy Sourk Gosling also brought to our attention that Bill Anderson, a teacher and coach during the 1950s, passed away at the age of 98 on Nov. 22, 2018.
The Class of 1959 will host the 2020 meeting to be held Sunday, May 24, 2020, at the Goff Community Building.
