Edelman and Stallbaumer earn trip to State Tournament


Two Lady Jays are headed to the 3-2-1A State Tournament in Prairie Village after they placed fifth overall at the 3-2-1A Regional Tournament Friday and Saturday, Oct. 11-12, in Hillsboro.

Senior Deborah Edelman and junior Nicole Stallbaumer earned their bid to the State Tournament after going 2-1 during the tournament. As the number four seed, Edelman and Stallbaumer defeated Banda and Campa of Sacred Heart 6-1 and 6-0 in their first match of the tournament.

For their second match-up, Edelman and Stallbaumer met up with Favero and Favero of Maranatha Christian. They end up falling in this close match 6-1, 2-6 and 7-10. This loss dropped them down to compete for a fifth or sixth place spot in the tournament.

In their next match, Edelman and Stallbaumer met up with senior teammates Kinsey Menold and Hannah Wertenberger. Edelman and Stallbaumer defeated their teammates 6-1 and 6-4.

In their final match of the tournament, Edelman and Stallbaumer competed against Bolinder and Feyh of Wabaunsee. They won their final match 6-1 and 6-4, which earned them a fifth-place finish and a bid to the State Tournament.

The 3-2-1A State Tournament will take place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 18-19, at Prairie Village-Harmon Park Tennis Complex, 7727 Delmar in Prairie Village. Play will begin at 10:30 a.m.


Also competing in doubles were Menold and Wertenberger, who were seeded number eight. They defeated Engel and Zhou of Kansas City Christian 6-2 and 6-1 in their opening round match. The duo then met up with Bartels and Knoflicek of Kansas City Christian where they fell 6-0 and 6-1. Bartels and Knoflicek were the eventual champions in the doubles bracket.

Menold and Wertenberger dropped down to the consolation bracket to compete for a bid at the State Tournament. They ended up falling to their teammates Edelman and Stallbaumer. Menold finished the season with a 21-8 record, while Wertenberger finished her season with a 20-9 record.


Seniors Rachel Kramer and Bree Voos competed in the singles bracket of the tournament.

Kramer met up with Peyton Price of Rossville for her first match-up of the tournament. Kramer won 6-1 and 6-1. Kramer then met up with Emma Sand of Kansas City Christian. She fell in this match-up 0-6 and 0-6. Sand eventually placed third overall in the tournament. Kramer finished her senior season with a 17-12 record.

Voos competed against Lily Perrin in her opening round match. She lost 0-6 and 0-6. Perrin eventually placed second overall in the tournament. Voos finished her senior season with an 11-11 record.

As a team, Sabetha placed sixth overall with 4 points. Other teams’ scores and placings were Kansas City Christian, 19, first; Smoky Valley, 16, second; Salina-Sacred Heart, 7, third; Wabaunsee, 5, fourth; Maranatha Christian, 4, fifth; Rossville, 2, seventh; and Marysville, 1, eighth. Other teams competing, but not placing were Bennington, Elyria Christian, Hillsboro and Perry Lecompton.
