Birthday: Donald Laney
Donald Laney of Sabetha will celebrate his 90th birthday on Feb. 1, 2020.
His family will be hosting an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Apostolic Christian Home dining room.
Donald was born Jan. 31, 1930, in Carthage, Mo., and graduated from high school there. Donald married Jeraldine Boyd, also of Carthage.
Don started out his young career working for GTE (Automatic Electric). Company goals at the time were to switch all telephones in small towns across America over to the new clicker dial system and move all operator switch boards out of private homes to a town office building. While working for them for 10 years, Don and Jerri pulled a mobile home all around the United States moving from town to town making the new offices and systems for each town. They would stay approximately four months before moving on to the next assignment. Due to the constant moving, each of their children – Deborah, Doug, Jeff and Sandy, and foster son Jim – were born in different states.
When that job was completed, Don and Jerri settled in Falls City, Neb., where Don built their family home. Then, Don worked at the Falls City Telephone Co. for 36 years as the head general manager. When technology advanced again in the 1980s, the clicker dial systems – that Don and Jerri originally replaced – became out of date. He went to school in Chicago to learn the new computer phone system, which then had to be installed into the Falls City Office, along with burying fiber optic cables all over Richardson County.
Cards can be sent to Donald Laney, 1705 Roosevelt Street, Apt. 82, Sabetha, KS 66534.
