Jay wrestlers compete in 2020 JayHusker Tournament

The Sabetha Bluejay wrestling squad traveled to Marysville on Saturday, Jan. 18, to participate in the 2020 JayHusker Invitational Wrestling Tournament. The tournament featured 15 teams from the area. The Jays finished the day with 40 team points.

Beatrice captured the team title with 165 points, with Marysville finishing in second place with 148.5, followed by Shawnee Heights with 139.

The lone placer in the tournament for the Jays was senior 170-pound Walker Lowdermilk. Lowdermilk finished the day with a second place medal after falling in the championship bout to Noah Ackerman of Marysville. Lowdermilk – 17-2 on the year – defeated Sean Wunder of Shawnee Heights and Ian Bottom of Rock Creek with first period pins to move into the championship semifinal bout against Brody Nelson of Beatrice. Lowdermilk defeated Nelson in a close bout, with a score of 2-0, to move into the championship match against Ackerman. Ackerman defeated Lowdermilk by technical fall to gain the title.

“This was a very tough tournament, and we were really not prepared for that level of competition,” said Head Coach Ricky Creek. “Walker [Lowdermilk] wrestled like I expected him to, and it showed with his effort and performance.”

Sabetha hosted Burlington, Rossville and Royal Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 21. These results were not available at The Herald’s press time. The Bluejays will travel to Holton on Saturday, Jan. 25. Competition begins at 9:30 a.m.
