Leonard Samuel Baumgartner, 93, died on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.
Leonard was born on Dec. 22, 1926, the son of Louis Baumgartner and Lena (Hanni) Baumgartner, in Pawnee City, Neb. He was one of two children born to this union. He attended Prairie Star Country School, and graduated from Bern Rural High School in 1944. Grain and Livestock farming with his dad, and later with his sons, was a way of life for many years.
He devoted his life to Christ shortly before his marriage to Nancy Jane Hartter on April 8, 1962. Five children were born to this union.
Leonard is survived by two sons, Jeff (Kim) Baumgartner and Jay (Heidi) Baumgartner, both of Bern; two daughters, Heidi (Jeff) Bahler of Wolcott, Ind., and Holly (Duane) Meyer of Bern; three brothers-in-law, Steve (Lois) Hartter of Sabetha, Lynn (Barb) Hartter of Topeka, and Neil (Evelyn) Hartter of Bern; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, of 39 years; daughter and son-in-law, Carmen and Lee Ukele; granddaughters, Marlee Ukele and Natalie Baumgartner; and brother and sister-in-law, Les and Leora Baumgartner.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2020, at the Bern Apostolic Christian Church. A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. The interment will be made in the Bern Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery.
