Ten Bluejay athletes earn post-season honors

 

Ten 2019-20 winter sport athletes from Sabetha High School have earned Big 7 League and/or All State Honors.

Those named with All League or All State Honors are listed below, as well as team and individual achievements for the 2019-20 winter season.

Girls’ Basketball

The Lady Jays opened their season on Dec. 6, 2019, against Marysville and wrapped up the season against Nemaha Central on Saturday, March 7. The Lady Jays were crowned champions at their mid-season tournament in Burlington after defeating Caney Valley, Rock Creek and Labette County. The Lady Jays then finished their season with an 19-4 record after falling to Nemaha Central, 42-34, in the semi-final game of the 3A Sub-State Tournament in Hiawatha. Throughout the 2019-20 season, the Lady Jays tallied 1,152 points, 576 rebounds, 268 assists and 278 steals.

Maggi Hughes

Senior

All Big 7 League, Topeka Capital Journal All State Honorable Mention, Wichita Eagle All State Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2019-20 season, Maggi totaled 194 points, 54 rebounds, 49 assists and 36 steals. She shot 32.43 percent from two-point range, 39.5 percent from the three-point range and 67.44 percent from the free throw line.

Leah Renyer

Senior

All Big 7 League Honorable Mention, Topeka Capital Journal All State Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2019-20 season, Leah totaled 194 points, 112 rebounds, 27 assists and 56 steals. She shot 42.7 percent from two-point range and 47.73 percent from the free throw line.

Melinna Schumann

Junior

All Big 7 League (unanimous selection), Topeka Capital Journal All State Honorable Mention, Wichita Eagle All State Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2019-20 season, Melinna totaled 237 points, 96 rebounds, 51 assists and 44 steals. She shot 35.92 percent from two-point range, 34.48 percent from the three-point range and 65.28 percent from the free throw line.

Boys’ Basketball

The Bluejays opened their season on Dec. 6, 2019, against Marysville and wrapped up the season on Monday, March 2 against Nemaha Central. The Bluejays brought home a second place finish at their mid-season tournament in Burlington. The Bluejays then finished their season with an 10-11 record after falling to Nemaha Central in the opening round of the 3A Sub-State Tournament in Hiawatha.

Throughout the 2019-20 season, the Bluejays tallied 1,087 points, 647 rebounds, 253 assists and 169 steals.

Braden Argabright

Senior

All Big 7 League Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2019-20 season, Braden totaled 278 points, 107 rebounds, 39 assists and 32 steals. He shot 46.36 percent from two-point range, 26.52 percent from the three-point range and 60.34 percent from the free throw line.

Gabe Garber

Senior

All Big 7 League, Topeka Capital Journal All State Second Team, Wichita Eagle All State Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2019-20 season, Gabe totaled 380 points, 94 rebounds, 112 assists and 60 steals. He shot 49.75 percent from two-point range, 32.09 percent from the three-point range and 59.78 percent from the free throw line.

Wrestling

The Bluejay grapplers opened their season on Dec. 7, 2019, in Wamego, and concluded their season by sending three grapplers to State Championships. Two boys – senior Walker Lowdermilk and junior Kaden Dillon – qualified for the 3-2-1A State Championship on Feb. 28 and 29 in Hays, while Senior Vivian Strahm competed in the first Girls’ Wrestling Championship in Salina on Feb. 27.

During the season, the Bluejay wrestlers earned third place at the Big 7 League Tournament.

Walker Lowdermilk

Senior

All Big 7 League

Walker, 170 pounds, finished the 2019-20 season with a record of 35-6. During the season, he placed first at the Sabetha Dual Invitational and the Big 7 League Tournament. He was also the Regional Champion at Council Grove. During the season, he also placed second at the Wamego Invitational, JayHusker Tournament, Greg Sadowski Tournament and Fairbury Invitational. Walker qualified for the State Championship with his Regional Championship.

Colby Tinklin

Senior

All Big 7 League

Colby, 182 pounds, finished the 2019-20 season with a record of 25-13. During the season, he placed first at the Big 7 League Tournament, third at the Greg Sadowski Tournament and fourth at the Wamego Invitational.

Kaden Dillon

Junior

All Big 7 League Honorable Mention, All State Honorable Mention

Kaden, 152 pounds, finished the 2019-20 season with a record of 24-8. During the season, he placed second at the Fairbury Invitational, Big 7 League Tournament and Regional Tournament at Council Grove. He also placed third at the Greg Sadowski Tournament in Holton, and then capped off his season with a fifth place win at the 3-2-1A State Championship.

Rhett Rowland

Freshman

All Big 7 League Honorable Mention

Rhett, 126 pounds, finished the 2019-20 season with a record of 5-17. He placed second at the Big 7 League Tournament during his first season as a Bluejay grappler.

Landen Carr

Freshman

All Big 7 League Honorable Mention

Landen, 195 pounds, finished the 2019-20 season with a record of 2-8. He placed second at the Big 7 League Tournament during his first season as a Bluejay grappler.
