Filing deadline nears

The filing deadline for the 2020 Election is less than two weeks away. Filings must be submitted by noon Monday, June 1, to election officials. There are multiple positions on this year’s ballot, including county, state and national positions.

Nemaha County

In Nemaha County, two commissioners’ seats are open, as well as County Clerk, County Treasurer, Register of Deeds, County Attorney and County Sheriff.

The position for Nemaha County Commissioner for the 2nd District is currently held by Tim Burdiek. He has re-filed for the position.

The position for Nemaha County Commissioner for the 3rd District is currently held by Dennis Henry. He has not re-filed for the position.

The position for Nemaha County Clerk is currently held by Mary Kay Schultejans. She has not re-filed for the position.

The position for Nemaha County Treasurer is currently held by Janell Niehues. She has re-filed for the position.

The position for Nemaha County Register of Deeds is currently held by Roxann Holthaus. She has not re-filed for the position.

The position for Nemaha County Attorney is currently held by Brad Lippert. He has not re-filed for the position.

The position for Nemaha County Sheriff is currently held by Richard Vernon. He has re-filed for the position.

Positions for trustee and treasurer will be open for the following townships: Adams, Berwick, Capioma, Center, Clear Creek, Gilman, Granada, Harrison, Home, Illinois, Marion, Mitchell, Nemaha, Neuchatel, Red Vermillion, Reilly, Richmond, Rock Creek, Washington and Wetmore.

Positions for committeemen and committeewomen will be open for the following Party Offices: Adams, Berwick, Capioma, Center, Clear Creek, Gilman, Granada, Harrison, Home, Illinois, Marion, Mitchell, Nemaha, Neuchatel, Red Vermillion, Reilly, Richmond, Rock Creek, Washington, Wetmore, Centralia-Home, Centralia-Illinois, Sabetha First Ward, Sabetha Second Ward, Sabetha Third Ward, Sabetha Fourth Ward, Seneca First Ward, Seneca Second Ward and Seneca Third Ward.

Brown County

In Brown County, two commissioners’ seats are open, as well as County Clerk, County Treasurer, Register of Deeds, County Attorney and County Sheriff. The position for District Judge in District 22, Division 2 also is open.

The position for Brown County Commissioner for the 2nd District is currently held by Keith Olsen. He has not re-filed for the position.

The position for Brown County Commissioner for the 3rd District is currently held by Dwight A. Kruse. He has re-filed for the position.

The position for Brown County Clerk is currently held by Melissa Gormley. She has not re-filed for the position.

The position for Brown County Treasurer is currently held by Cheryl Lippold. She has not re-filed for the position.

The position for Brown County Register of Deeds is currently held by Nellie Brockhoff. She has re-filed for the position.

The position for Brown County Attorney is currently held by Kevin Hill. He has re-filed for the position.

The position for Brown County Sheriff is currently held by John D. Merchant Sr. He has re-filed for the position.

The position for District Judge, District 22 is currently held by John Weingart. He has re-filed for the position.

The City of Fairview has positions open for mayor and two positions for city council.

Positions for trustee and treasurer will be open for the following townships: Irving, Padonia, Hamlin, Morrill, Walnut, Hiawatha, Robinson, Washington, Mission and Powhattan.

Positions for committeemen and committeewomen will be open for the following precincts: Irving, Padonia, Reserve, Hamlin, Morrill, Walnut, Hiawatha TWP, Robinson, Washington, Mission, Powhattan, Hiawatha 1st Ward, Hiawatha 2nd Ward, Hiawatha 3rd Ward, Hiawatha 4th Ward, Horton 1st Ward, Horton 2nd Ward and Horton 3rd Ward.

State

At the State level, area positions open are Kansas Senate, District 1; Kansas House of Representatives, District 62; Kansas State Board of Education, District 6; Supreme Court Justices, 4 and 6; and Court of Appeals Judges, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 14.

National

At the National level, positions that will be voted on in our area in the 2020 General Election will be U.S. President and Vice President; U.S. House of Representatives, 1st Congressional District; U.S. House of Representatives, 2nd Congressional District; and U.S. Senate, Class 3.

Important Dates

June 1 – Candidate filing deadline and deadline to change party affiliation for Primary Election.

July 14 – Last day to register to vote for the Primary Election.

July 15 – Advance voting in person and by mail may begin.

July 28 – Deadline for voters to apply for advance ballots by mail for Primary Election.

August 4 – Primary Election, if needed. Primary elections are only held if three or more candidates file for the same position.

October 13 – Last day to register to vote for the General Election.

October 14 – First day advance voting ballots are mailed, and first day of in-person advance voting.

October 27 – Deadline for voters to apply for advance ballots by mail for General Election.

November 3 – General Election
