Grapplers finish 4-1 at Rossville

The Sabetha Bluejay wrestling squad traveled to Rossville Saturday, Jan. 9, to participate in the 2021 Rossville Dual Tournament, which featured eight teams.

The Jays wrestled five duals and won four of those with their only loss coming to Silver Lake 48-27. Sabetha defeated Wellington 61-21, Riley County 54-18, Wellsville 43-36 and ACCHS 39-32.

“This weekend will go down as one of the most exciting weekends I have been a part of since I have been here,” said Head Coach Ricky Creek. “We had three very close duals with our whole team invested in each match. I never had to get the kids hyped up, they did it for each other.”

The Jays were led by freshman 126-pound Colin Menold. Menold went 5-0 on the day with four of those wins coming by a fall. Sophomore 120-pound Kellan Spielman also turned in a stellar performance by going 4-1 on the day with three pins and a major decision.

“We were missing one of our better wrestlers Saturday but the underclassmen really stepped up and filled the spots,” Creek said. “This team has really grown up a lot in the last few weeks.”

Sabetha will travel to Falls City, Neb., Thursday, Jan. 14, for dual action and then will venture to Marysville on Saturday, Jan. 16, for tournament action.
