Lady Jays finish second at Nemaha Central tournament

Following their split with Hiawatha and Jeff West the Tuesday prior, Sabetha traveled to Seneca for the Nemaha Central tournament on Saturday, Sept. 11. The Lady Jays took second in the tournament overall after a hard fought semi-final match against Marysville.

“‘Leaps and bounds’ is my reaction when I hear any comment about the team’s improvement,” said Head Coach Abby Stueve. “This team is finding their intensity and comfort with each other. Replacing four hitters from the previous year has its growing pains, but overall, the effort is there to find a way to win and persevere. We are still having moments where the team spirals once a mistake is made in which some are detrimental to the team’s success, but we will find a way past that, as well. We finished second in the tournament after a hard fought semi-final game against Marysville and we’re able to claim a top finish for this tourney three years in a row.”

There were nine teams present for the tournament. Pool A consisted of Hiawatha, Horton and the NEK Saints. Pool B consisted by Marysville, Atchison and Riverside, and Pool C included Sabetha, Rock Creek and ACCHS.

In pool play, Sabetha defeated Rock Creek – 25-13 and 25-22. The Lady Jays then defeated ACCHS – 25-20 and 27-25.

In the next round of play, Hiawatha defeated Sabetha – 25-15 and 25-23. Then, Sabetha defeated Riverside – 25-11 and 26-24.

In the semi-finals, the Lady Jays defeated Marysville in three sets – 17-25, 25-19 and 25-23.

In the championship match, the NEK Saints defeated Sabetha in two straight sets – 25-17 and 25-21.

Throughout the day, Sabetha’s hitting attack was led by juniors Halle Scoby and Mary Lukert, who tallied 106 and 115 good hits, respectively. Scoby also tallied 43 kills, while Lukert tallied 46.

As a team, Sabetha served at 92.6 percent for the day, tallying 37 aces. Junior Jessica Gruber and senior Kinzey Meyer tallied 12 and 11 aces, respectively.

On the defensive side, senior Kendall Edelman racked up 85 serve receives and 43 digs, while Lukert tallied 75 serve receives and 40 digs.

Freshman Erin Boltz led the Jays with six solo blocks at the net.

Sabetha traveled to Royal Valley Tuesday, Sept. 14. These results were not available at The Herald’s press time.
