Cardinals fall to Pike Valley, 54-6

After losing their game on the road to Linn the week prior, the Wetmore Cardinals were looking for a win when they traveled to Pike Valley on Friday, Sept. 24. Despite their efforts, the Cardinals would lose to Pike Valley, 54-6.

Pike Valley got on the board first after scoring on a 68-yard kickoff return. The point-after failed. Pike Valley continued to control the field in the first quarter, scoring two more times. At the end of the first, the score was 22-0.

Pike Valley kept up the momentum on offense in the second quarter, when they made it to the endzone four times. Heading into the second half, the score was 48-0, Pike Valley.

Wetmore’s defense stepped up in the second half and managed to score in the third quarter on a seven-yard run by Kyler Wommack. The point-after failed. Pike Valley added their final touchdown in the third quarter and secure the 54-6 win.

“We just had way too many mental mistakes, every time we got something going on offense, we would just hurt ourselves,” said Head Coach Miles Hanzlicek. “Once again on defense, we couldn’t tackle or control the run.”

Wommack led the Cardinals offensively with two catches for 31 yards and nine rushes for 40 yards. He also tallied six tackles during the game.

Wetmore will travel to Onaga for their next match-up on Friday, Oct. 1.
