Bluejays fall to Red Hawks

The Sabetha Bluejay boys hosted the Hiawatha Red Hawks on Tuesday, Jan. 12, with both teams still in the hunt to find their first win of the season. The Jays were down by only 3 points after the first frame, and this contest would turn out to be a nail biter, with the score within a possession or two the entire night. Sabetha outscored their guest in the final stanza, but they were plagued by fouls and turnovers and could not get over the hump, as they fell to the Red Hawks, 47-44.

“We played hard,” said Head Coach Scott Burger. “Our defense was much better and gave us a chance to win.”

Matthew Garber inked the first points of the night when he dropped a jump shot after a minute and a half of the opening quarter. Hiawatha splashed a triple for their first points of the night to take the lead, but a bucket by Thadd Menold and a triple by Braden Menold knotted the score at 7 with just under three minutes to play in the period. Hiawatha would go on a little run in the waning minutes of the quarter, but was broken when Marcus Bauman dropped a bucket with 20 ticks left in the frame. The Jays trailed 12-9 at the end of one.

Hiawatha opened the second quarter scoring the first 6 points to extend their lead by 9 points, 18-9, in the first minutes of the period. Kaleb Evans posted his first points of the night to break the Red Hawk’s run, and T. Menold added a bucket with B. Menold popping his second trey of the game to pull their team within 4 points of their guest. Darrin Funk added a bucket late to round out the scoring for the Jays in the second frame, but the Jays would trail 22-18 at the break.

Sabetha’s bigs got into some foul trouble in the third quarter. As a team, they tallied six personal fouls in the period, which allowed just 1 point for the Red Hawks from the stripe, but made several players game-on being less aggressive.

Evans added a free throw and B. Menold made his third triple of the game to bring the Bluejays within striking distance, 25-22. Bauman chipped in 4 points in the third, Cooper Bradbury posted his first points of the game with a soft jumper and Garber added a deuce in the effort, but Sabetha would trail 35-30 at the end of the third.

The Jays outscored the Red Hawks 14-12 and trailed just 41-39 with two and half minutes to play, but they struggled to tie the game and take the lead. Sabetha had a couple of players foul out in the fourth and Bradbury put the team on his shoulders to lead his team in scoring with 7 points in the final frame. Davis Rokey would add 3 points in the quarter with T. Menold and Garber chipping in a bucket each. But the Jays just could not turn the corner and ended up falling 47-44 to Hiawatha.

“Some key stats that hurt us were turnovers having 19 for the game, and we got into foul trouble throughout the game, which allowed our opponents 21 free throws while we only made it to the line seven times,” Coach Burger said. “We need to move our feet without reaching on defense. We also need to be more efficient on the offensive end by cutting down on unforced turnovers.”

Sabetha will abandon the Big Seven League this week as they will travel to the Burlington Invitational tournament. The Jays opened the tournament taking on the 4-3 Paola Panthers at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19.
