Thirteen Bluejay athletes earn postseason honors

Thirteen 2020-21 winter sport athletes from Sabetha High School have earned Big 7 League and/or All State Honors.

Those named with All League or All State Honors are listed below, as well as team and individual achievements for the 2020-21 winter season.

Girls’ Basketball

The Lady Jays opened their season on Dec. 4, 2020, against Marysville and wrapped up the season against Cheney on Saturday, March 13, in the State Championship game. The Lady Jays were crowned champions at their mid-season tournament in Burlington after defeating Paola, Independence and Rock Creek. The Lady Jays then finished their season with an 23-3 record after falling to Cheney, 60-54, in the 3A State Championship game in Hutchinson. Throughout the 2020-21 season, the Lady Jays tallied 1,232 points, 728 rebounds, 262 assists and 296 steals.

Throughout the 2020-21 season, Leah totaled 355 points, 180 rebounds, 54 assists and 66 steals. She shot 44 percent from two-point range, 28.57 percent from the three-point range and 54.27 percent from the free throw line.

Melinna Schumann

Big 7 All League, Sports in Kansas All-Tournament Team, Sports in Kansas 3A Player of the Year Finalist, Topeka Capital Journal All State Second Team, Wichita Eagle All State Second Team, Kansas Basketball Coaches Association All State First Team, Sports in Kansas All State First Team, Eastern Kansas Sports All State Second Team

Throughout the 2020-21 season, Melinna totaled 327 points, 185 rebounds, 69 assists and 61 steals. She shot 41 percent from two-point range, 31.3 percent from the three-point range and 73.6 percent from the free throw line.

Wrestling

The Bluejay grapplers opened their season on Dec. 5, 2020, in Wabaunsee, and concluded their season by sending five grapplers to State Championships. Four boys – sophomore Josh Herrmann, and freshmen Cole Hinton, Colin Menold and Cullen Wikle – qualified for the 3-2-1A State Championship Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 27, in Hays, while senior Kylie Meredith competed in the Girls Wrestling Championship in Salina on Feb. 26.

During the boys’ season, the Bluejay wrestlers earned second place at the Sabetha Dual Tournament. The team also was crowned Big 7 League Champions, District Champions and Regional Champions. The Bluejay Grapplers also placed sixth at the 3-2-1A Sub-State Tournament.

During the girls’ season, the Lady Jays grapplers placed third at the District Tournament.

Kylie Meredith

All State Honorable Mention

Kylie, 235 pounds, finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 15-7. Kylie qualified for State where she placed fifth overall. She also placed second at the 3-2-1A Sub-State Tournament.

Kaden Dillon

Big 7 All League

Kaden, 160 pounds, finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 32-4. He placed first at the Big 7 League Tournament.

Zach Grimm

Senior

Big 7 All League

Zach, 182 pounds, finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 15-11. He placed first at the Big 7 League Tournament.

Josh Herrmann

Sophomore

All State Honorable Mention, Big 7 All League

Josh, 170 pounds, finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 31-9. Josh qualified for the State Tournament where he placed sixth overall. During the season, he also placed fourth at the Sub-State Tournament and first at the Big 7 League Tournament.

Jacob Kuenzi

Jacob, 195 pounds, finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 21-17. He placed second at the Big 7 League Tournament.

Trevin LaVoie

Landen, 152 pounds, finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 8-14. He placed first at the Big 7 League Tournament.

Jonathan Renyer

Big 7 All League

Jonathan, 145 pounds, finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 26-18. He placed first at the Big 7 League Tournament.

Kellan Spielman

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention

Kellan, 120 pounds, finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 25-16. He placed second at the Big 7 League Tournament.

Cole Hinton

Freshman

Big 7 All League

Cole, 138 pounds, finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 26-10. Throughout the season, he placed first at the Big 7 League Tournament and fourth at the Sub-State Tournament, which qualified him for the State Tournament.

Colin Menold

Freshman

Big 7 All League

Colin, 126 pounds, finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 30-14. Throughout the season, he placed first at the Big 7 League Tournament and fourth at the Sub-State Tournament, which qualified him for the State Tournament.

Cullen Wikle

Freshman

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention

Cullen, 113 pounds, finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 27-19. Throughout the season, he placed second at the Big 7 League Tournament and third at the Sub-State Tournament, which qualified him for the State Tournament.

Boys’ Basketball

The Bluejays opened their season on Dec. 4, 2020, against Marysville and wrapped up the season on Monday, March 3, against Marysville. The Bluejays then finished their season with an 3-18 record after falling to Marysville in the opening round of the 3A Sub-State Tournament in Marysville.

Throughout the 2020-21 season, the Bluejays tallied 853 points, 565 rebounds, 208 assists and 116 steals.
