Jays take pair from Red Hawks

The Sabetha Bluejays hosted the Hiawatha Red Hawks at Somerset Park on Thursday, April 29, for a pair of contests. The Jays continued their hot hitting combined with tough pitching to win both games by 14-4 and 15-4 margins. The Jays once again put up a barrage of runs in both contests to end both games in the fifth inning.

Game One

In the opening contest, sophomore Josh Herrmann turned in a solid performance both on the mound and at the plate. Herrmann took the mound for the Jays and pitched four innings, allowing four runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Senior Darrin Funk came on in relief in the fifth inning and closed out the game, allowing no runs on no hits with no walks.

The Jays scored seven runs in the first two innings and then added five in the bottom of the fourth to take total command of the game. Herrmann went three-for-five at the plate with one RBI. Seniors Funk and Drew Schmelzle continue to swing the bat well for the Jays, with each of them picking up a pair of hits with Funk hitting a double and Schmelzle hitting a triple.

Junior Tristan Wittwer also went one-for-four at the plate with a double and two RBIs.

Game Two

In the nightcap, the Jays used a 14-run third inning to dominate the Red Hawks and end the game in the fifth inning.
