Three ways to increase your faith

From childhood, the lad was possessed by a mute spirit. On occasion, the spirit would seize him by throwing him down in a violent convulsion, causing him to foam at the mouth, and become ridged. Often, he would also throw him into fire or water to destroy him.

His father was desperate to help his son. He called for the disciples of Jesus to cast this spirit out, but they could not. When Jesus entered the scene, the father of the boy pleaded with Him for help. Jesus answered, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” (Mark 9:23).

The father responds, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (vs. 24). Jesus commands the unclean spirit to come out of the son and enter him no more. The demon comes out of the boy with great convulsions leaving him as one dead. Jesus reached out and raised him up, returning him to his father.

Faith, as we observe, is vital to our spiritual growth. Without faith, we cannot begin to please our God (Hebrews 11:6). Therefore, it is our aim not only to have faith, but to grow in our faith also. So, how do we accomplish this?

Pray for Faith. The father in the above illustration knew he needed more faith. This need motivated him to ask Jesus for help. Jesus complied. He increased the man’s faith with a demonstration of power over the demon that possessed his son.

Today, if we are struggling with our faith, we will find benefits through prayer. God is always willing to aid us in our spiritual growth. Faith is no exception. When we bring the various needs of our hearts before God in prayer and see our prayers answered, it strengthens our faith.

Look to the examples of Faith. The eleventh chapter of Hebrews is a “Hall of Faith.” Each of the individuals listed in that chapter had various obstacles to overcome. As the Hebrew writer points out, each of these overcame their adversities through the power of faith. Therefore, they serve as great examples to each of us.

Each of us face adversities in this life. When we look back at the people of God and observe how they overcame, it gives us great confidence in our God. Consequently, we find that inner strength to persevere through the trials. The examples of faith that God has provided in His word is truly a great blessing.

Examine the Word of Faith. Paul wrote, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17). When we examine all the prophecies that had been made throughout the centuries concerning Jesus, we find that every one of these 330 plus prophecies has been fulfilled flawlessly in His life and in His death.

The gospel of Matthew is of particular interest. Matthew wrote to the Jews with the purpose of creating faith that Jesus is the Messiah. As he tells the story of Jesus, Matthew often pauses to illustrate how certain events in the life of Christ is a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. Matthew records the event, then he quotes the prophecy, thus creating faith.

Faith is essential in the life of the Christian. Fortunately, we can grow in our faith. We grow through an active prayer life, looking to the examples of faith and by studying the word of God. When we accomplish these things, our faith before God will always flourish.

God bless each of you.
