A book of Remembrance
“16 Then those who feared the Lord spoke with one another. The Lord paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name.” (Malachi 3:16 ESV)
Do you have a book of Remembrance, that recalls the special and significant times of your life? I suppose you might have photo-albums, and shoe boxes with cards and letters, and Facebook helps with reminders; but do you have a collection of God’s expressions of love for you? There are a lot of Scriptures that speak of God’s love.
Jeremiah 31:3, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefor I have continued my faithfulness to you.” Or how about, “O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever” Psalm 136:1. I could go on.
Now to prime the pump to get you started on some memories of God’s love for you:
I am going to borrow some words from a song… “Memories: Light the corners of my mind.”
How far back does your memory go to recall an instant when God’s love touched your life. I can recall going to the church nursery and crawling up into Mrs. Brown’s lap for a Bible story. There are memories of the young adults having a Saturday night pancake feed at the church. My mom taught a First grade Sunday School class I attended. These memories go back to when I was three to six years old.
“Memories: Misty watercolor memories of the way we were…” Do you remember working in the yard and explaining to a child how God’s hand is part of all creation, and that God designed the different seasons? Do you recall a special trip, or picnic or time outdoors that speaks to you of God’s love being present, and you sensed it and knew this was a special moment?
“Memories: Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind..”
Do you have a memory of God smiling at you through a Sunday School teacher, or a pastor, perhaps a kind and friendly usher, or the lady using a walker that would pass out candy, give you a hug and her hearing aids would buzz, and it all made it seem like going to God’s house was a good place to be? Who made you smile? Who do you give your smile to? Who do you greet now and become God’s smile to them — someone older or younger?
“Memories: May be beautiful…”
Do you have a recent memory of God working and acting in your life? What about a time when you put your trust in God? When God answered a prayer? How about a time when you looked back at some events and realized God’s hand was on your life guiding you through to higher ground?
There are some memories that make us sad and some that make us feel warm and good all over. I hope you will take some time and record some memories in the book of Remembrance, to help you remember that God has always been there and has always loved you. Find a comfy chair, kick off your shoes and take a stroll down memory lane.
Grace and peace to you.
