Athletic Honors: Eighteen Bluejay athletes earn post-season honors

Eighteen 2021 spring sport athletes from Sabetha High School have earned Big 7 League and/or All State Honors. Those named with All League or All State Honors are listed below, as well as team and individual achievements for the 2021 spring season.

Track and Field

The Sabetha High School Bluejay track and field teams concluded the season at the State Track and Field Championships held Friday, May 28, in Wichita. The Jays medaled in three events at state. The Jays competed in nine meets (including state).

Ellen Glynn

Senior

Big 7 All League HM 4×800-Meter Relay Team

Throughout the season, Ellen competed with the 4×800-meter relay team that placed first in two meets and second in two meets. Her best team time was 10:41.05 at the Nemaha Central Invitational held on May 4.

Hattie Lukert

Senior

Big 7 All League 800-Meter Run, Big 7 All League 1600-Meter Run, All State HM 4×800-Meter Relay Team

In the 800-meter run this year, Hattie placed first in six meets, second in one meet and fifth in one meet. She placed ninth at State with a time of 2:30.64. Her best time was 2:26.46 at St. Marys on April 30.

In the 1600-meter run, Hattie placed first in five meets. Her best time of 5:38.64 was achieved at the Sabetha Invitational held on May 6.

Hattie was a member of the 4×800-meter relay team that placed first in three meets, fourth in one and third at State with a time of 10:04.38. The best team time was 10:04.24, at Regionals on May 21.

Leah Renyer

Senior

Big 7 All League HM Discus, All State HM Javelin

Throughout the season, Leah placed first in discus at one meet, second at three meets, third at two meets, and fourth at one meet. She placed 11th at State with a throw of 102 feet, 6 inches. Her best throw was 136 feet, 11 inches, which was achieved on April 13 at Royal Valley.

In javelin, Leah placed first at four meets, second at two meets and third at one meet. She also placed third at State with a throw of 136 feet, 1 inch. Her best throw of 138 feet, 9 inches, was achieved on May 6, at Sabetha.

Olivia Saner

Junior

Big 7 All League Pole Vault, All State HM Pole Vault

Throughout the season, Olivia placed first at six meets, fourth at one meet and third at one meet. Olivia was league champion in pole vault on May 13, when she had a vault of 9 feet, 6 inches. This vault put her in a three-way tie for the SHS record. She broke the school record the next week at Regionals, on May 21, when she had a vault of 10 feet — her personal best. She placed sixth at State with a vault of 9 feet, 6 inches.

Tyrese Bishop

Junior

Big 7 All League HM 1600-Meter Run

Throughout the season, in the 1600-meter run, Tyrese placed second in two meets, third in one meet, and sixth in two meets. His best time of 4:57.07 was achieved on May 6, at Sabetha.

Emily Krebs

Junior

Big 7 All League HM 4×800 Meter Relay Team, Big 7 All League HM Pole Vault, All State HM 4×800 Meter Relay Team

Throughout the season, Emily competed on the 4×800-meter relay team and placed first in five meets, second in two meets and fourth at one meet. She ran the 4×800-meter relay at State and placed third with a time of 10:04.38. Her best team time was 10:04.24, which was achieved at Regionals on May 21.

In pole vault, Emily placed second at three meets and fourth at one meet. Her best vault was 8 feet, which was achieved at St. Marys on April 30.

Mary Lukert

Sophomore

Big 7 All League 300-Meter Hurdles, Big 7 All League HM 100-Meter Hurdles, Big 7 All League HM 4×800-Meter Relay Team, All State HM 4×800-Meter Relay Team

Throughout the season, Mary placed first in the 100-meter hurdles in three meets, second in two meets and fifth in one meet. Her best time in 100-meter hurdles was 16.54, which was achieved on April 6, at Sabetha.

In 300-meter hurdles, she placed first in the in four meets, second in one meet and third in one meet. She also placed 11th in the at State with a time of 48.70. Her best time was 48.11, which was achieved on May 13, at League.

In the 4×800-meter relay, she placed first in six meets, second in one meet, third in one meet and fourth in one meet. At State, she was a member of the 4×800-meter relay team that placed third with a time of 10:04.38. The best team time was 10:04.24, which was achieved at Regionals on May 21.

Leah Lukert

Freshman

Big 7 All League HM 800-Meter Run, Big 7 All League HM 4×800-Meter Relay Team, All State HM 4×800-Meter Relay Team

Throughout the season, Leah placed second in the 800-meter run in three meets, third in one meet, fourth in two meets and sixth in one meet. Her best time of the season was 2:34.90 at Regionals on May 21.

For the 4×800-meter relay, her team placed first in five meets, second in two meets, fourth in one meet and third at State with a team time of 10:04.38. The best time for the 4×800-meter relay team was 10:04.24, which was achieved at Regionals on May 21.

To earn All State, track and field athletes must place in the top two at State. To earn All League, athletes must place first at League. To earn All League Honorable Mention (HM), athletes must place second at League. All statistics are according to The Sabetha Herald’s records.

Golf

The Sabetha High School Bluejay golf team opened their season at Wamego on Tuesday, April 6, and concluded their season at the State Golf Tournament on Monday and Tuesday, May 24 and 25. Sabetha sent two golfers – Riley and Caden Lierz – to the State Tournament in Hesston. Riley finished 23rd in the State Tournament after advancing to the second day of play. Throughout the season, the Bluejays placed second at their home tournament, first at the Big 7 Quad Tournament in Hiawatha, second at the Big 7 Quad in Sabetha, second at the Marysville invitational and third in the Big 7 Tournament.

Riley Lierz

Senior

Big 7 All League

Throughout the 2021 season, Lierz placed third at the Sabetha Invitational, fourth at the Big 7 Quad in Hiawatha and fourth at the Big 7 League Tournament. His best score of the season – 83 – came during the Regional Tournament and on both day one and day two of the State Tournament.

To earn All League, golfers must place in the top five at League. To earn All League Honorable Mention (HM), golfers must place sixth through eighth at League. Softball

The Sabetha High School Bluejay softball team opened their season on Monday, March 29, against Pleasant Ridge and closed their season in the first round of the Regional Tournament against St. Marys.

The Lady Jays finished their season, 9-10. Throughout the 2021 season, the team went 176-474 at the plate, all while tallying 111 runs and 100 RBIs, and striking out 110 times.

Melinna Schumann

Big 7 First Team All League Outfielder

Throughout the 2021 season, Schumann tallied 58 at bats, 18 runs, 20 hits and 13 RBIs, all while only striking out 12 times.

Mikenna Haverkamp

Sophomore

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention Infielder

Throughout the 2021 season, Haverkamp tallied 41 at bats, 13 runs, 20 hits and 14 RBIs, all while only striking out eight times.

Laura Edelman

Freshman

Big 7 First Team All League Infielder

Throughout the 2021 season, Edelman tallied 56 at bats, 19 runs, 26 hits and 27 RBIs, all while only striking out 14 times.

Baseball

The Sabetha High School Bluejay baseball team opened their second season on Monday, March 29, against Pleasant Ridge and closed their season in round one of the Regional Tournament against Rock Creek. The team fell to Rock Creek, 4-7, in the Regional game. The Bluejays went 13-8 on the season. The team went 188 of 600 at the plate, all while tallying 125 RBIs and 153 runs, and striking out 98 times.

Darrin Funk

Senior

Big 7 First Team All League Outfielder

Throughout the 2021 season, Funk had 67 at bats, 22 runs, 24 hits, all while driving in nine RBIs. He also only struck out seven times. Funk took the mound for 33 innings. While at the mound, he threw 397 pitches. He struck out 14 batters.

Kaleb Evans

Senior

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention Pitcher

Throughout the 2021 season, Evans had 69 at bats, 10 runs, 18 hits, all while driving in 19 RBIs. He also only struck out 10 times. Evans took the mound for 27.2 innings. While at the mound, he threw 501 pitches. He struck out 14 batters.

Cooper Bradbury

Senior

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention Infielder

Throughout the 2021 season, Bradbury had 62 at bats, nine runs, 21 hits, all while driving in 17 RBIs. He also only struck out nine times. Bradbury took the mound for 6.4 innings. While at the mound, he threw 138 pitches.

Drew Schmelzle

Senior

Big 7 First Team All League Utility Player

Throughout the 2021 season, Schmelzle had 64 at bats, 14 runs, 21 hits, all while driving in 23 RBIs. He also only struck out 10 times.

Tristan Wittwer

Junior

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention Pitcher

Throughout the 2021 season, Wittwer had 72 at bats, 14 runs, 27 hits, all while driving in 14 RBIs. He also only struck out eight times. Wittwer took the mound for 25.6 innings. While at the mound, he threw 515 pitches and struck out nine batters.

Josh Herrmann

Sophomore

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention Catcher

Throughout the 2021 season, Herrmann had 71 at bats, three runs, 27 hits, all while driving in 14 RBIs. He also only struck out seven times. Herrmann took the mound for 16 innings. While at the mound, he threw 294 pitches and struck out three batters.
