Lady Jays split with Hiawatha, Jeff West

After a six-day hiatus, the Lady Jays volleyball team traveled to Jeff West Tuesday, Sept. 7, to take on Hiawatha and Jeff West. The Lady Jays went 1-1 for the night, after falling to Hiawatha in two sets, but defeating Jeff West in two sets.

Sabetha lost in two sets – 21-25 and 15-25 – against the Red Hawks.

“Hiawatha came out a formidable force; they ran a fast offense, full effort defense and made only a few errors,” said Head Coach Abby Stueve. “Our block was a bit slow to react to their offense, which caused our back row to become open season for the Hiawatha hitters. Our block is strong when it’s closed and on time, but it just wasn’t as consistent as we needed it to be against them. Luckily, we have a season to improve that aspect, among others.”

Juniors Halle Scoby and Mary Lukert led the Jays hitting attack with 16 and 15 good hits, respectively. Scoby also tallied four kills, while Lukert tallied three. Junior Jessica Gruber also was a force at the net, tallying 10 good hits and five kills.

As a team, the Lady Jays had a 100 percent serving percentage, along with two aces by Gruber and senior Kendall Edelman. Edelman also tallied eight digs and 17 serve receives.

Jeff West

Sabetha swept the Tigers in two straight sets – 27-25 and 25-22.

“Jeff West proved to be very scrappy and consistent in their play,” Coach Stueve said. “We struggled pretty hard to overcome mental mistakes but ended up beating them in two straight sets.”

Scoby and Lukert led Sabetha’s hitting attack again, tallying 20 and 17 good hits, respectively. Scoby also tallied seven kills, while Lukert tallied five.

On the serving side of things, the team served at 91.8 percent. Senior Emily Krebs racked up 12 good serves, while Scoby tallied nine good serves and four aces.

Edelman and Lukert each tallied 13 serve receives, while Scoby tallied nine. In blocking, Gruber led the Jays with two solo block and two assisted blocks.
