Wetmore falls to Frankfort, 43-0

After losing to Valley Falls the week prior, the Wetmore Cardinals were looking to add their first win to their record when they welcomed Frankfort to town on Friday, Sept. 10. Despite their efforts, the Cardinals lost 43-0.

“The boys played tough against a very good team,” said Head Coach Miles Hanzlicek. “A lot of our starters were riddled with illnesses this last weak and I just don’t think they’re back to 100 percent yet. So all of my underclassmen got a lot of playing time and experience, so maybe that will really help in upcoming games. We’re really disappointed in the fact that we couldn’t get in the end zone, but we have to start thinking about the future and work hard this week to fix some more things.”

Frankfort came out strong in the first quarter, scoring three touchdowns and making good on one point-after kick and two two-point conversions. They would hold the 23-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

In the second, Frankfort managed to score two additional touchdowns against Wetmore’s defense. They capitalized on one two-point conversion, while their second point-after attempt failed.

Frankfort scored their final touchdown in the third on a 58-yard run. Their point-after attempt failed. The final score was 43-0.

Sophomore Weston Schultejans led the Cardinals in tackles with 10. He was followed by junior Dierk Hanzlicek and freshman Kaden Claycamp, who each tallied nine.

D. Hanzlicek led in rushing attempts with 24 rushes, totaling 67 yards. Junior Kyler Wommack tallied three catches for 25 yards and six rushes for 11 yards.

Wetmore will travel to Linn Friday, Sept. 17, for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
