Voter registration deadline approaches

Another election is fast approaching, with this election deciding numerous municipal and school board offices in the area. The General Election will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2.

Voter registration must be completed by the close of business on Tuesday, Oct. 12.

In-person locations for voter registration in Nemaha County include banks in Bern, Centralia, Corning and Wetmore, City Clerk offices in Sabetha and Seneca, and County Clerk’s office at the Nemaha County Courthouse in Seneca.

In-person locations for voter registration in Brown County include the Brown County Clerk’s Office in Hiawatha, City Clerk offices in Hiawatha or Horton, or the Driver’s License Department in the County Treasurer’s Office.

Area City Elections

For the open Sabetha City Commission positions, Cody Bletscher and Julie Burenheide filed for Mayor. Incumbent Doug Clark did not re-file. Sharon Kibbe and incumbent Maridel Wittmer have both filed for the Commissioner of Finance position.

In the City of Bern, Dallas Wood has filed for Mayor and Caleb Meyer has filed for one of the two open council member positions.

In the City of Fairview, Charles Kramer, Paul Reynolds and Bridget Harvey have filed for the three open council member seats.

In the City of Goff, no one filed for the open mayor seat nor the five open council member positions.

In the City of Hamlin, no one has filed for Mayor. Filing for one out of five of the open council member positions was Russell Richardson.

In the City of Horton, Bobby Bacon and Carmela Boller have filed for the Commissioner of Streets and Utilities. For the Commissioner of Finance, Tina Nigh has filed to challenge incumbent Kenneth Krug.

In the City of Morrill, no one has filed for Mayor nor any of the five open council member positions.

In the City of Oneida, Patrick Allen filed for Mayor. For four out of five open council member seats, filings were made by Shawn Branson, Joyce Russell, Kathe Vore and Carol Winkler.

In the City of Powhattan, Lyle Chadwell and Vickie Schuetz filed for Mayor. Filing for the five open council member positions were Sharon Willey, Luke Pollock, Norwood Foster, LeRoy Ward and Sean Horton.

In the City of Seneca, Joe Mitchell has filed for Mayor, and Kathy O’Brien has filed for Treasurer. Kylee Bergstrom filed for the first ward council member position, while Alice Lackey filed for second ward and James Mitchell filed for third ward.

In the City of Robinson, Mark Lieneman has re-filed for Mayor, while David P. Taylor and Arthur Malott have filed for two of the five open council member seats.

In the City of Wetmore, Jason Claycamp has filed for Mayor, and Michelle Cochran, Curtis Goodman and Ed Nott have filed for three of the five open council member positions.

The last day to file for an open position was June 1. Anyone wishing to challenge for any open seat at this time would have to do so by write-in campaign.

Area School Board Elections

For the open USD No. 113 Board of Education positions, multiple new names are in the mix. Stan Keim of Sabetha has re-filed for Position 2. Anissa Bloom and Doug Renyer, both of Wetmore, have filed for Position 4. This position is currently held by Ed Reznicek, who chose to not re-file. Phillip Buessing of Axtell has filed for Position 6. This position is currently held by Ann Shaughnessy of Axtell, who chose not to re-file.

For the Nemaha Central USD No. 115 Board of Education, Doug Dalinghaus and Amy Sudbeck have filed for Position 1; Cara Baker, Troy Lewis and Dr. Tony Szymankowski filed for Position 2; Jason Kramer filed for Position 4; and John V. Deters filed for Position 6.

For the Hiawatha USD No. 415 Board of Education, Roni Tietjans filed for Position 4, and Andrea R. Groth has re-filed for Position 5 and will be challenged by Jacquelyn Kerl. John F. Hoschouer, Jim Robidoux and Jeff Moore have filed for Position 6. Current board member in Position 6, Keith Erdley, did not file for re-election.

For the Horton USD No. 430 Board of Education, Katelyn Ross has re-filed for Position 4. Both Shelby Rice and Jared Wilson have filed for Position 5, currently held by Jamie Bottom, who did not file for re-election. For Position 6, Sarah Stirton, Shelly Smith and Kayla Thorson have filed, while current board member Jacob Bruning did not file for re-election.

The last day to file for an open position was June 1. Anyone wishing to challenge for any open seat at this time would have to do so by write-in campaign.

Other Elections

For the two positions of the Meadowlark Extension District No. 7 board, Marya Haverkamp of Bern and Marcia Bauerle of Goff have filed.
