Boys place second at Nemaha Central

The Wetmore Cardinals cross country team traveled to Nemaha Central on Thursday, Sept. 23, to take on multiple area schools. The boys’ team placed second overall during the meet, while only two Lady Cardinals competed during the race.


In the boys’ race, Wetmore placed second overall with a score of 68. Other teams and their placings and scores were St. Marys Academy, first, 44; Nemaha Central, third, 79; Horton, fourth, 83; Valley Falls, fifth, 86; and Onaga, sixth, 109.

Colby Hanzlicek led the Cardinal boys with a second place finish and a time of 17 minutes, 55.2 seconds. He was followed by Eric Bloom in 12th with a time of 19 minutes, 50.6 seconds; Braden Henry in 16th with a time of 20 minutes, 9.7 seconds; Jacob Carls in 31st with a time of 21 minutes, 15.4 seconds; Brayden McQueen in 44th with a time of 22 minutes, 15.4 seconds; and Kurt Shumaker in 60th with a time of 27 minutes, 9.7 seconds.

Hanzlicek, Bloom and Henry each earned medals at the event.


Competing for the Lady Cardinals were Rylie Nichols, who finished in 32nd place with a time of 28 minutes, 20.7 seconds. She was followed by Kaitlyn Claycamp, who finished in 42nd place with a time of 32 minutes, 23.2 seconds.

The Cardinals will travel to Centralia on Saturday, Oct. 2, for their next meet.
