SES National Blue Ribbon School

This past month, Sabetha Elementary School was honored to be named one of five schools in the entire state of Kansas to be awarded the 2021 National Blue Ribbon Award. This is an amazing honor for our educators, students and parents. Only a very small percentage of schools ever receive this recognition.

According to a press release from the Kansas State Department of Education, “The Blue Ribbon program recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools in one of two performance categories: Exemplary High Performing and Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing.”

Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among the state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s subgroups and all students. In the high-performing category, schools are recognized for being among the state’s highest-performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. All Kansas schools were recognized in the Exemplary High Performing Schools category.

Six years ago, after evaluating our processes, USD 113 personnel made the decision to overhaul our assessment program and intervention plan for struggling learners. Change is never easy, but we moved forward because our data indicated this was in the best interest of our children. We have been supported by the professionals across the district as well as by consultants with the Kansas State Department of Education’s Technical Assistance Network (TASN).

There is still room for improvement, but through this process, the students and staff of SES have improved through hard work, staying focused and being dedicated to the researched-based plan. Receiving this award reinforces the work that has been accomplished and sets the bar high for the future.

Congratulations Sabetha Elementary students, staff and parents! Through your dedication and hard work, you have earned the designation as a 2021 National Blue Ribbon School!
