Lady Jays place third at Silver Lake Tournament

The Sabetha Lady Jays volleyball team placed third at the Silver Lake Tournament on Saturday, October 2. After splitting with Royal Valley and Jeff West earlier in the week, the Lady Jays were looking to snag a tournament championship when they traveled to Silver Lake on Saturday, Oct. 2. During the tournament, Sabetha would win three of their five matches for a third place finish.

“The team looked the most relaxed and consistent this weekend,” said Head Coach Abby Stueve. “This is the time of the year we need to see the team executing regularly and eliminating the errors. We never played a perfect game, but we gave perfect effort most times. I’m happy with the direction of this team with the recent changes I’ve made.”

The four teams in Pool A were Jeff West, Silver Lake, St. Marys and Sabetha. The four teams in Pool B were Perry-Lecompton, Rossville, Royal Valley and Chapman.

Jeff West

For their first game in pool play, Sabetha met up with the Jeff West Tigers. Sabetha would end up defeating the Tigers in two sets – 25-14 and 25-17. 

Junior Mary Luket and Freshman Erin Boltz led the Lady Jays on the hitting attack, tallying 18 and 16 good hits, respectively. They also tallied seven and five kills, respectively. Lukert, and seniors Emily Krebs and Kendall Edelman each had perfect serving during the match, which contributed to the team’s 91.8 serving percentage.

Lukert and Edelman led the team on the defensive side, with 11 and nine digs, respectively, and 13 and 10 serve receives, respectively.

Junior Jessica Gruber tallied three solo blocks, while freshman Aubrey Schmelzle and Lukert each tallied two assisted blocks.

St. Marys

In the second round of pool play, the Lady Jays met up with St. Marys. Sabetha would end up winning in three sets – 23-25, 25-10 and 25-13.

Lukert once again led Sabetha on the hitting attack with 28 good hits and 15 kills. while Boltz tallied 17 good hits and six kills. 

Senior Kinzey Meyer, Lukert and Edelman each had perfect serving throughout the match, but it was junior Halle Scoby who led Sabetha in good serves with 16.

Edelmen led the Jays on the defensive side with 14 digs and 15 serve receives. 

Schmelzle was a force at the net, tallying two solo blocks and one assisted block.

Silver Lake

In the final round of pool play, Sabetha took on Silver Lake. They would end up falling in two sets – 26-28 and 25-16. 

Lukert and Gruber led at the net with 17 good hits and eight kills by Lukert and 12 good hits and four kills by Gruber. 

Krebs and Lukert kept their perfect serving streak going, which contributed to the team’s 88.6 serving percentage. Scoby and Meyer each tallied 14 serve receives on defense. Scoby also tallied five digs, while Edelman tallied six.

Three solo blocks were executed by the Lady Jays during the match, with Schmelzle, Gruber and Lukert each tallying one.

Rossville

With their two wins and one loss in pool play, Sabetha made their way into the finals where they met up with Rossville in the semi-final round. Sabetha would end up falling in two sets – 20-25 and 16-25. 

Once again, Lukert led the Lady Jays on the hitting attack, with 24 good hits and five kills. Krebs, Lukert, Scoby, Gruber and Edelman each had perfect serving during the match, which contributed to the team’s 97.3 serving percentage.

Edelman led Sabetha on the defensive side, with 20 serve receives and 14 digs.

The team racked up five solo blocks during the match with Gruber tallying two, and Krebs, Boltz and Lukert each tallying one.

Perry Lecompton

In the final match-up for third place, Sabetha met up with Big 7 League rival Perry-Lecompton. Sabetha fought until the end and won the match in just two sets – 25-21 and 25-20. 

Lukert once again led at the net, along with Boltz. They each tallied 14 good hits, while Boltz racked up eight kills and Lukert with seven.

Krebs, Scoby, Edelman and Lukert had perfect serving during the match, which contributed to the team’s 95.7 serving percentage. 

On the defensive side of the ball, Edelman tallied 13 serve receives and six digs, while Lukert tallied eight serve receives and seven digs.

With the win, the Lady Jays earned third place. Silver Lake ended up taking the Championship, while Rossville placed second.

The Lady Jays traveled to Nemaha Central on Tuesday, Oct. 5. These results were not available at The Herald’s press time.
