Lady Jays fall to the Thunder in two matches

The Sabetha Lady Jays traveled to Seneca Tuesday, Oct. 5, for two matches against Nemaha County rival – the Nemaha Central Thunder. Despite their efforts, Sabetha would fall in both matches to the Thunder.

“The match up between Nemaha Central and Sabetha is always intense,” said Head Coach Abby Stueve. “The rivalry is almost palpable in Nemaha Central’s gym with its limited seating for the oversized crowd. It was a tall order for these girls playing only the second night with the new rotation and new roles. I was pleased with our performance on the court over all and our fight against a state ranked team. However, disappointed in some little things we are not doing consistently, yet. Strides are being made frequently, but I’m finding myself less and less forgiving on the aspects of our game that need to be cleaned up at this point in the season.”

Match One

In the first match, Sabetha fell in three sets – 22-25, 25-23 and 22-25.

Junior Mary Lukert led Sabetha’s hitting attack with 33 good hits and 14 kills. Junior Halle Scoby was also a force at the net with 19 good hits and five kills. Freshman Erin Boltz tallied 22 good hits and four kills.

In serving, the Lady Jays served at 95.7 percent for the match. Senior Emily Krebs led Sabetha with 17 good serves and two aces.

On the defensive side of the ball, senior Kendall Edelman tallied 16 digs and 16 serve receives. Senior Kinzey Meyer also tallied 10 digs and 20 serve receives. Boltz tallied four solo blocks at the net.

Match Two

In the second match, Sabetha fell in two sets – 14-25 and 23-25.

Once again, Lukert led the Jays hitting attack with 18 good hits and eight kills, while Scoby tallied nine hits and three kills.

In serving, the Lady Jays served at 88.6 percent. Meyer led the Jays in serving with 14 good serves and four aces.

On the defensive side of the ball, Edelman tallied 10 digs and 14 serve receives, while Scoby tallied five digs and 16 serve receives. Boltz racked up two solo blocks during the match.

Sabetha welcomed Holton to town on Tuesday, Oct. 12. These results were not available at The Herald’s press time. Sabetha will also play host for the Sabetha Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 16, beginning at 9 a.m.
