Bluejays pick up a 56-13 win against the Tigers

After picking up a District win last week versus Royal Valley, the Bluejays improved to 1-2 in District Four and were looking to better their record against another familiar foe, the Jeff West Tigers on Friday, Oct. 15. Sabetha hit the throttle to start the game with two punt returns for touchdowns and never let off the gas to take the win, 56-13.

Sabetha won the toss, differed to the second half, so the Tigers received and went three and out and punted deep from their own territory. Marcus Bauman returned the punt 45 yards to the end zone in the early minutes of the first period.

Josh Herrmann repeated with a 61-yard punt return for a touchdown after Jeff West’s second possession stalled and out of the gate the Jays lead, 14-0. Herrmann would tack on two additional scores in the first half, one from six yards out and another from one yard out in the second frame to help give his team a 28-0 advantage late in the second period.

Bauman had a second punt return for a touchdown late in the second quarter only to have it called back on a penalty. But he would get his redemption with a 75-yard pass reception for a score with Matthew Garber delivering the strike and Bauman finishing the score with his scramble.

The Jays would lead 35-7 at the break after the Tigers mounted a drive that capitalized on a two-yard run by Jacob Brooks with a little more than in a minute to play in the half.

Herrmann would have his fourth touchdown of the game when he powered to the end zone from 35 yards out on the Jay’s first possession of the third quarter making the score 42-7. He would account for 197 yards of offense on the ground for the contest. Pepign Dengemasine was perfect on the point-after-touchdowns making six of six.

Sabetha would tack on two additional scores in the third period, as it was time for the reserve players to get a chance to get some varsity experience. Jonathan Renyer scrambled for a 38-yard score early in the third and Chase Frey punched in a score from eight yards out halfway through the frame. Nate Menold nailed both of the point-after-touchdowns and Sabetha led 56-7.

Jeff West did manage a score in the third quarter but the point-after was blocked. The fourth quarter was scoreless but the damage was done and the Jays came out on top, 56-13.

“I’m proud of this team for securing a playoff spot for 14 consecutive years,” said Head Coach Garrett Michael. “We have done a great job offensively, being the most physical team on the field and executing back-to-back games with zero turnovers. Defensively we made the plays that were presented to us and tackling better. Our special teams have been outstanding all year and then they turn in two punt returns for touchdowns, and they were close to getting three. The Hiawatha game is another playoff game, because this game gives us our seed, either third or fourth.”

Sabetha will welcome Big 7 League foe –the Hiawatha Red Hawks – to town on Friday, Oct. 22.

Editor’s Note: Tackle statistics from the Friday, Oct. 15, against the Jeff West Tigers were not available at The Herald’s press time.
