Three girls are recognized at the Hiawatha Halloween Frolic on Sunday, October 31. Miss Morrill Emma Schilling, left, is named Hiawatha Halloween Queen First Runner-Up, while Miss Sabetha Kendall Edelman, right, is named Miss Congeniality, and Miss Seneca Faith Henry, middle, is crowned Hiawatha Halloween Queen.

A tradition marked its 107th year as Hiawatha celebrated its annual Halloween Frolic on Sunday, Oct. 31. As part of the annual event, area high school senior girls participated in the Halloween Queen scholarship contest.

Two area girls — Kendall Edelman, Miss Sabetha, and Emma Schilling, Miss Morrill, vied for the title of queen, along with 10 other contestants. Other candidates include Lizzy Thomas, Miss Saint Marys; Faith Henry, Miss Seneca; Sidney Johansen, Miss Powhattan; Mikaela Cowley, Miss Muscotah; Kelcei Clem, Miss Huron; Teagan Rodvelt, Miss Horton; Maliyah Soto, Miss Horton; Audrey Kimmi, Miss Holton; Michaela Gruber, Miss Hiawatha; and Briana Rodvelt, Miss Everest.

Miss Seneca Faith Henry was crowned queen, while Miss Morrill Emma Schilling was named First Runner-Up and Miss Sabetha Kendall Edelman was named Miss Congeniality.

The girls were awarded scholarships: Henry, $1,000; Schilling, $500; and Edelman, $250.

Miss Sabetha

Miss Sabetha is Kendall Edelman. Kendall attends Sabetha High School and is the daughter of Michael and Yalana Edelman. Some of her honors include Honor Roll, KSHSAA State Basketball Runner Up, Kansas Volleyball Association First Team All-Academic, Burlington Basketball Invitational All-Academic Team and KSHSAA State Volleyball Champions. Kendall has been involved in KAY Club, volleyball, Bluejay Buddies, national honor society, track, basketball and band. She plans to attend Kansas State University and major in nutrition and health. Kendall is sponsored by Heaven Schuette.

Miss Morrill

Miss Morrill is Emma Schilling. Emma attends Sabetha High School and is the daughter of Noel and Deb Schilling. Some of her honors include Honor Roll, Class Vice President, Cheerleading Captain, FCCLA President, NCA All-American Cheerleader, first place in FCCLA STAR Events at Districts and State and Gold rating at Nationals. Emma has been involved in cheerleading, tennis, FCCLA, band, Grains for Hope, NHS, SADD, Bluejay Buddies, yearbook, KAYS, STUCO and competitive cheerleading. She plans to attend Kansas State University or Northwest Missouri State University, and major in psychology and minor in nutrition. Emma is sponsored by The Country Cabin and Champion Central Athletics.

About the contest

The essay contest was held Sunday, Oct. 24. The contestants presented their essays, interviewed with the judges and answered two questions, before performing their talent.
