Lady Jays finish season with 17-21 record

The Lady Jays met up with Nemaha County rival, the Nemaha Central Thunder, in the first round of Sub-State action on Saturday, Oct. 23, in Sabetha. The Lady Jays fell in two sets – 25-22 and 25-11 – to end their season.

“The girls came out fired up and playing with heart,” said Head Coach Abby Stueve. “It was clear in the first set these girls can be gamers and compete at a high level. However, we quickly fell in the second set and, thus, ended our 2021 season. Just as what plagued us throughout the season, execution errors and self doubt, prevailed on the court.”

Junior Mary Lukert led Sabetha’s hitting game with 22 good hits and seven kills. Junior Jessica Gruber also tallied 15 good hits and two kills, while freshman Erin Boltz had 13 good hits and four kills.

Senior Emily Krebs tallied 12 assists during the match.

As a team, Sabetha served at 97 percent and were led by senior Kendall Edelman, who tallied eight good serves and two aces. Krebs followed closely with seven good serves and one ace.

Edelman led the Lady Jays on the defensive side with six digs and 16 serve receives. She was followed by Lukert, who tallied two digs and 11 serve receives.

Lukert tallied one solo block during the match, while Krebs and Gruber each tallied one assisted block each.

“I’m proud of the tenacity and grit the team has with the rotational and positional changes I made during the season,” Coach Stueve said. “There are numerous players with versatility on the team and that is only going to serve the tradition Sabetha Volleyball team has built. It’s always hard to see a senior’s season end, but hope her experiences on this team over the years has instilled the love for the game in their hearts and helped developed their character in a positive way.”

Sabetha finished the 2021 season with a 17-21 record.
