Grapplers open season at Wamego

The 2021-22 boys high school wrestling season got underway on Saturday, Dec. 4. The Jays traveled to Wamego for the 2021 Red Raider Classic which featured 13 teams from the area.

The Jays completed the day with a tie for fourth place in the team standings. Concordia captured the team title with 230 points followed by Abilene with 190.5, Wamego with 185.5, and Sabetha and Ottawa tied for fourth with 176 points.

The Jays had four wrestlers place in the top four with three second place medals and three fourth place medals.

“Saturday was one of the toughest meets we will attend this year with lots of tough 4A opponents that we will not see anywhere else,” said Head Coach Ricky Creek. “Our guys came out and wrestled very well. Many of our weaknesses were exposed which will help us to continue to grow and develop our wrestling. This is the best our team has looked at this time of the year since I have been here coaching.”

Junior 170-pound Josh Herrmann, and sophomores 132-pound Colin Menold and 285-pound Josh Grimm each went 4-1 on the day capturing second place medals in the tournament. Sophomores 145-pound Cole Hinton and 195-pound Dalton Rokey, and junior 182-pound Jacob Kuenzi captured fourth place medals for the Jays.

The Jays will travel to Rockport, Mo., on Thursday, Dec. 9, for double dual action with Rockport and Auburn.
