Jays capture team title at home tournament

The Sabetha High School wrestling team places first at the Sabetha Bluejay Dual Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, December 11.

The 2021 Sabetha Bluejay Dual Invitational Wrestling Tournament was held on Saturday, Dec. 11, in Sabetha with six teams competing in dual format against each other.

The Sabetha varsity captured the team title by defeating all five of their opponents – Silver Lake, Auburn, Washburn Rural JV, Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer and Sabetha JV. The Jays defeated HTRS, 42-30; Auburn, 58-24; Washburn Rural JV, 70-6; Sabetha JV, 69-6; and Silver Lake, 45-28.

The Jays were led by sophomore 126-pound Cullen Wikle and sophomore 145-pound Cole Hinton, who each picked up five wins for the Jays.

“Saturday was a great way to start the season,” said Head Coach Ricky Creek. “There were lots of good matches and it was a great confidence boost before we head to Holton on Thursday and the dual tournament in Belleville the following Tuesday during our Christmas break.”

The Jays will travel to Holton on Thursday, Dec. 16, for dual competition, and then travel to Belleville on Tuesday, Dec. 21, to take part in the Republic County Dual Tournament, which will start at 1 p.m.
