Lady Jays fall in close scoring game

The Sabetha Lady Jays basketball team were looking for their first win, when they hit the road to take on the Holton Wildcats on Friday, Dec. 10. The score remained close throughout the game, but the Wildcats would edge out the Lady Jays to claim the 27-24 win.

“Friday was a tough result for us,” said Head Coach Nate Bauman. “We felt like we had plenty of opportunities to take control of the game and just had a hard time getting the ball in the basket. Our defense was outstanding all night, limiting Holton’s post players and forcing several turnovers, we just struggled to turn those extra possessions into points.”

Sabetha led 7-2 at the end of the first quarter, but Holton outscored Sabetha and held the 12-9 lead heading into the second half. The two teams battled during the second half and went shot-for-shot, with Sabetha and Holton both scoring 7 points in the third and 8 points in the fourth. Holton would win, 27-24.

Junior Mary Lukert led Sabetha in points with 10. She was followed closely by senior Jadyn Dorn who scored 9.

“The girls continue to work extremely hard and I know we are getting close to turning the corner toward that first win,” Coach Bauman said. “The high character young ladies in our locker room will continue to stay together and work together to that end.”

Sabetha hosted the 2-1 Riverside Cyclones on Tuesday, Dec. 14. These results were not available at The Herald’s press time. The Lady Jays will finish the 2021 portion of the season when they host the 0-3 Jeff West Tigers on Friday, Dec. 17.
