Sabetha High School athletes earn All Big 7 League, State honors

Nineteen athletes from Sabetha High School were named in the 2021 fall sports Big 7 League and All State Honors. Those being named with All League or All State Honors are listed below, as well as team and individual achievements for the 2021 fall season.

Volleyball

The Lady Jays opened their season at the Marysville Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 28, and finished their season on Saturday, Oct. 23, during the first round of Sub-State against Nemaha Central. The Jays finished the season with an 17-21 record.

Throughout the season, the Lady Jays tallied 2,588 good hits, along with 874 kills. They also tallied 1,691 good serves, including 170 aces. The team also racked up 1,057 defensive digs, 1,679 serve receives, 869 assists, 99 solo blocks and 47 assisted blocks.

Emily Krebs

Senior

Big 7 All League

Emily put up excellent numbers for the season. Offensively, she tallied 818 set assists, 22 kills on 78 good hits, as well as 22 aces on 334 good serves. Defensively, Emily had 149 defensive digs, 12 serve receives, seven solo blocks and four assisted blocks.

Mary Lukert

Junior

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention

Mary was a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball this season. Offensively, she tallied 11 set assists, 317 kills on 851 good hits, as well as 30 aces on 294 good serves. Defensively, Mary had 229 defensive digs, 469 serve receives, 18 solo blocks and 15 assisted blocks.

Football

The Sabetha Bluejay Football team opened the 2021 season against Chapman on Friday, Sept. 3, and wrapped up the season on Thursday, Oct. 28, in the District game against the Perry-Lecompton Kaws. The Bluejays finished their season with a 4-5 record.

Throughout the 2021 season, the Bluejays tallied 142 first downs, 364 rushes for 2,077 yards and completed 43 out of 95 passes for 606 yards. The Bluejays also tallied 2,575 yards in total offense.

Josh Herrmann

Junior

Big 7 All League First Team Running Back, Sports in Kansas 3A Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2021 season, Josh totaled 55 tackles and 129 rushes for 861 yards for the Bluejays. He also scored 14 touchdowns.

Marcus Bauman

Sophomore

Big 7 All League First Team Wide Receiver, Sports in Kansas 3A Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2021 season, Marcus totaled 39 tackles, three interceptions and 13 receptions for 258 yards for the Bluejays. He also scored six touchdowns. 

Tristan Wittwer

Senior

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention Tight End

Throughout the 2021 season, Tristan totaled 20 tackles, five receptions for 60 yards and one rush for two yards for the Bluejays. He also scored two touchdowns.

Thadd Menold

Senior

Big 7 All League First Team Offensive Lineman, Big 7 All League First Team Inside Linebacker, Sports in Kansas 3A Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2021 season, Thadd totaled 57 tackles, four quarterback sack, one fumble recovery and two rushes for two yards for the Bluejays. He also scored one touchdown.

Josh Grimm

Sophomore

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention Offensive Lineman

During the 2021 season, Josh was the anchor Sabetha offensive line.

Chase Frey

Sophomore

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention Punter

Throughout the 2021 season, Chase totaled 33 tackles, one interception, one fumble recovery and 17 rushes for 138 yards for the Bluejays. He also scored four touchdowns.

Kaden Edelman

Senior

Big 7 All League First Team Defensive Lineman, Sports in Kansas 3A Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2021 season, Kaden totaled 38 tackles and one quarterback sack for the Bluejays.

Christian McAfee

Sophomore

Big 7 All League First Team Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, Sports in Kansas 3A Honorable Mention 

Throughout the 2021 season, Christian totaled 40 tackles, two quarterback sack, four receptions for 40 yards and 31 rushes for 118 yards for the Bluejays. He also scored one touchdown and one two-point conversions. As quarterback, Christian completed two passes for 17 yards.

Matthew Whittaker

Senior

Big 7 All League First Team Defensive Back, Sports in Kansas 3A Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2021 season, Matthew totaled 22 tackles, one reception and one rush for 12 yards for the Bluejays.

Jonathan Renyer

Junior

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention Defensive Back

Throughout the 2021 season, Jonathan totaled 39 tackles and 36 rushes for 240 yards for the Bluejays. He also scored two touchdowns.

Pepijn Dingemanse

Senior

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention Kicker

Throughout the 2021 season, Pepijn totaled 30 point-after touchdown kicks, as well as one 30-yard field goal.

Cross Country

The Sabetha Bluejay Cross Country team opened their season on Saturday, Sept. 4, at Marysville and concluded their season by sending the entire girls’ team and two boy harriers to the State meet on Saturday, Oct. 30, in Wamego. The boys’ team had one state medalist, while the girls’ team placed eighth overall.

Throughout the season, the boys’ team placed second at the Hiawatha and Marysville Invitationals.

Throughout the season, the girls’ team was declared Regional runner-ups and Big 7 League Champions. They also earned first place at the Marysville, Hiawatha and Horton Invitationals; and second place at the Sabetha Invitational.

Mary Lukert

Big 7 All League First Team

During the 2021 season, Mary placed first in two meets, including the Big 7 League meet. She also placed second in two meets, third at the 3A Regional meet and fifth in one meet. Mary competed in the 3A State race but did not finish due to an injury. Her best time for the season was 20 minutes, 43.9 seconds at the Rim Rock Invitational.

Leah Lukert

Sophomore

Big 7 All League First Team

During the 2021 season, Leah placed second at the Big 7 League meet. She also finished in fourth at the 3A Regional meet and in two other meets. Her best time for the season was 21 minutes, 18.18 seconds at the Big 7 League meet.

Laura Metzger

Freshman

Big 7 All League First Team

During the 2021 season, Laura placed in fifth at the Big 7 League meet and placed 10th at the 3A Regional meet. Her best time for the season was 21 minutes, 40.30 seconds at the 3A Regional meet.

Ellyannah Clinton

Freshman

Big 7 All League First Team

During the 2021 season, Ellyannah placed in eighth at the Big 7 League meet. Her best time for the season was 22 minutes, 15.47 seconds at the Big 7 League meet.

Kalvin Evans

Sophomore

Big 7 All League First Team

During the 2021 season, Kalvin finished in first place at the Big 7 League meet. He also placed second at two meets, third at one meet, fourth at one meet and seventh at the 3A Regional meet. His best time for the season was 17 minutes, 3.59 seconds at the Big 7 League meet.

Tyrese Bishop

Senior

Big 7 All League First Team, 3A All State Honorable Mention

During the 2021 season, Tyrese placed first at one meet, second at both the 3A Regional and Big 7 League meets, third at one meet and fourth at two meets. Tyrese finished his season by medaling at the 3A State meet with a 16th place finish. His best time for the season was 17 minutes, 8.87 seconds at the Big 7 League meet.

Cameron Harrell

Senior

Big 7 All League First Team

During the 2021 season, Cameron place fifth at two meets, including the Big 7 League meet. His best time for the season was 17 minutes, 29.96 seconds at the Big 7 League meet.

Tennis

The Lady Jays Tennis team opened their season on Thursday, Aug. 26, in Wamego and concluded their season at the 3A Regional meet on Friday, Oct. 8, in Hillsboro.

The tennis team placed first at one of the Sabetha meets and at one of the Hayden meets.

Competing in the 3A Regional competition for Sabetha at Hillsboro were seniors Madison Menold, Chloe Menold, Emma Schilling and Rachel Wertenberger, and juniors Kate Beyer and Samantha Arnold.
