The Lady Jays were still looking for their first win on the season when they hosted the 1-2 Riverside Cyclones on Tuesday, Dec. 14, at home. This was a tight game with Sabetha trailing by 7 points at the half, but they hit the throttle in the fourth quarter to pick up the win, 51-46.

“What a finish,” said Head Coach Nate Bauman. “We had a difficult time in the first half with rebounding and taking care of the ball, some of it due to Riverside and some of it due to us.”

The score was knotted at 14 at the end of the first quarter, but the Cyclones outscored the Lady Jays 17-10 in the second period and held a 31-24 at the intermission.

It was a battle in the third frame, but Sabetha closed the scoring gap slightly by outscoring Riverside 9-7 to make the score 38-33 in favor of the Cyclones.

“I was very proud of the way the girls responded and shored up some of those issues in the second half and kept fighting all the way to the end,” Coach Bauman said.

The Lady Jays climbed their way back into the game in the fourth quarter to keep the game close.

“We battled one possession at a time, back from 12 points down in the third quarter to eventually build a 7-point lead in the fourth and held on for the victory,” Coach Bauman said.

Sabetha outscored the Cyclones 18-8 in the final stanza and would come away with the win 51-46 led by three ladies scoring in double digits.

Mary Lukert led all scorers with 16 points and pulled down eight boards, Emily Krebs had 14 points and was perfect from the charity stripe, and Jessica Gruber finished the game with 14 points.

“These girls have been working hard and doing an amazing job of taking care of each other on and off the court as we have struggled to start the season, so I am so happy for the reward they got in their victory. They earned it,” Coach Bauman said.
