The Sabetha Lady Jays put together another win against Royal Valley on their home court, Friday Jan. 7.

Right out of the gates, Sabetha set the tone – led by junior Mary Lukert and senior Emily Krebs – taking advantage from the free throw line, shooting an impressive combined six of seven. Krebs seemed to always be a step ahead of the defense with three assists in the period, and junior post Jessica Gruber wasted no time contributing from the bench with 6 points in the first quarter.

Heading into the second quarter, Sabetha had a 14-6 lead and Royal Valley could not seem to slow down the grit and offensive fire power from Sabetha’s post game led by juniors Halle Scoby, Mikenna Haverkamp and Gruber. They accounted for 12 of the 16 points scored in the period to go along with their solid defense and rebounding. The Lady Jays went into the halftime break winning, 30-16.

Despite the Panthers being dominated in the first half, the visiting team came out hitting some big three pointers trying to close the gap on the score. However, the hustle play and physicality of Scoby was not going to let that happen as she seemed to win every loose ball skirmish and continued giving her team energy and momentum by being extremely active on the boards. Lukert found herself making a couple of vital baskets keeping the Lady Jays on top at the end of the third quarter, 42-29.

In the final period, the Lady Jays were able to not let the Panthers back in it with their ability to hit the crucial free throws from Lukert, Scoby, senior Rachel Wertenberger and senior Jadyn Dorn, as they closed the deal with a 54-39 win.

The old cliché phrase, “There is no ‘I’ in team,” could not have been any truer for this battle against the Royal Valley Panthers as the toughness and team camaraderie is growing for Sabetha Lady Jays as they are now on a two-game winning streak after starting the season 1-4.

Scoby and Gruber’s efforts led them both to almost recording a double-double. Scoby had 10 points, nine rebounds and Gruber had 10 points and seven rebounds. Lukert and Krebs were instrumental to the team’s success as well, with Lukert scoring 14 points and tallying four assists and Krebs scoring 11 points and tallying six assists.

“We were able to pick up right where we left off after our great second half versus Nemaha Central on Tuesday,” said head coach Nathan Bauman said. “It was truly a total team effort! I am extremely proud and happy for the girls and I’m excited to see how we continue to improve throughout the next part of our season.”

The Lady Jays played at Hiawatha on Tuesday, Jan. 11. These results were not available at The Herald’s press time. The Lady Jays will travel to Perry Lecompton on Friday, Jan. 14.
