School district to complete construction, renovation projects
During this summer, AHRS Construction will start working on the Prairie Hills USD No. 113 construction/renovation project at Sabetha Elementary School (SES), Axtell Public School and Wetmore Academic Center. Plans to renovate the district schools have been in the works for several years, but started to become a reality in 2021.
Ground work at the Sabetha school addition is planned to start in March 2022, and renovations are to start during the summer of 2022. Remodeling at Axtell and Wetmore also is planned to begin during the summer of 2022. All projects are expected to be completed around late 2022 to early 2023.
Bids for Sabetha and Wetmore will be grouped together as one project, and Axtell will be bid as its own project later. This is due to Axtell’s plans running behind as a result of new, unexpected additions and the misplacement of Axtell’s original building blueprints.
The project team includes Civium Architecture & Planning as the Architect, AHRS as the Construction Manager, Certus Structural Engineers as the Structural Engineer and PKMR Engineers as the MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) Engineer.
Main points of construction to be done at SES are as follows: new gym where east playground currently is; library and music room to connect to new gym addition with shared commons area; said library and music room to be used as storm shelter; add storage, office and bathrooms to new gym addition; demolition to the old P.E. stage and remodel into classroom; playground relocation; new asphalt for playground surface; refinish multipurpose and kitchen flooring; paint multipurpose room; remodel isolation room; remodel nurse’s office; additional classrooms; new parking spaces for the administrative office; additional parking and drop-off/pick-up lane reconfiguration; new entry canopy outside north entrance of SES; additional windows; replace glass block with new glazing system; administrative office relocation; re-roof building; and HVAC remodel of the south and east school wings.
Remodeling to be done at Axtell includes rainwater drainage repairs, repair window leaks, HVAC updates, and install new fire escape outside and a stairwell inside the gym.
For Wetmore, remodeling includes HVAC updates and gym renovations, including a new ceiling.
Alan Schmitz of AHRS will be the project manager due to his past experience working on school construction projects. Scott McKinley of PKMR Engineers will work on the HVAC systems.
