Bluejays sweep Rams in season-opening action

The Sabetha Bluejay baseball squad opened up the 2022 baseball season with a road trip to battle the Pleasant Ridge Rams on the diamond on Monday, March 28. The Jays swept the doubleheader from the Rams, winning the first game, 5-2, and the nightcap, 15-5.

Game one

In the opening game, the Jays knocked in five runs in the first two innings to take a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh. The Rams battled back with two runs, but that would be all the Jays would surrender as they held on for the 5-2 win. Sophomore Christian McAfee – who picked up the win – took the mound for the Jays and pitched four innings of solid baseball, allowing no runs on only one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.

Sophomore Aiden Lang came on in relief and turned in a stellar performance with two shutout innings, allowing no hits and striking out two. Junior Nohl Niehues and sophomore Jacob Grimm combined to pitch the seventh inning for the Jays and allowed two runs on two hits and two walks with one strikeout to close out the game.

The Jays managed five hits in the contest with junior Matt Garber leading the attack with a pair of singles. Sophomore Marcus Bauman, junior Josh Herrmann and senior Tristan Wittwer each collected an RBI for the Jays.

Game two

In the nightcap, the Jays fell behind 2-0 after one inning before exploding for seven runs in the top of the third to take a lead they would not relinquish. The Jays scored four runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach, winning 15-5 after six innings.

The Jays pounded out eleven hits in the contest with Wittwer going two for four at the plate with a home run and three RBIs. Sophomore Will Ulrich and Bauman also collected a pair of hits for the Jays. Lang, Garber and Niehues each knocked in a pair of runs as the Jays produced a very balanced attack.

Bauman took the mound for the Jays and pitched three innings, allowing four runs on one hit with four walks and four strikeouts.

Junior Nathan Voos came on in relief for the Jays and pitched two innings, allowing just one run on one hit with three walks and two strikeouts.

Sophomore Harper Schmelzle closed out the game for the Jays, allowing no runs and a walk.
