Jays sweep Bulldogs in home opener

The Sabetha Bluejay baseball team opened up their home schedule on Thursday, March 31, at Somerset Park with a doubleheader against the Marysville Bulldogs. The Jays swept the Bulldogs with a close 5-4 win in the opener, and then exploded in the nightcap for a dominating 17-7 victory.

Game one

In the opener, the Jays fell behind 4-0 after two and a half innings, but battled back in the bottom of the third to tie the game before scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. The Bulldogs were held scoreless from the third inning on as the Jay relievers shut down the Bulldog attack. The Jays managed only four hits in the opener, with senior Tristan Wittwer picking up a pair of RBIs for the Jays.

Wittwer took the mound for the Jays and pitched three innings, allowing four runs on three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Junior Jonathan Renyer came on in relief in the fourth and pitched two innings of shutout baseball, allowing one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.

Junior Matt Garber came on in the top of the sixth and pitched a scoreless inning, allowing two hits with one walk and three strikeouts. 

Sophomore Jacob Grimm was summoned for the bottom of the seventh inning to close out the game. Grimm shut down the Bulldogs, allowing nothing on the base paths and striking out two to preserve the win.

Game two

In the nightcap, the Jays came to life and pounded out 10 hits and scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth on their way to a 17-7 win that ended after five innings.

The Jays capitalized on eight errors by the Bulldogs to completely dominate the game. The Jay hitting attack was led by junior Josh Herrmann, who went three for four at the plate with a double and an RBI. Freshman Mitchell Kramer went two for three at the plate with a double and an RBI to contribute to the attack.

Herrmann took the mound for the Jays and pitched three and two-thirds innings, allowing seven runs on three hits with four walks and eight strikeouts. Sophomore Chase Frey came on in relief for the Jays in the top of the fourth and shut down the Bulldog attack, allowing no runs on just one hit with two strikeouts to earn the win for the Jays.

The Bluejays traveled to Royal Valley on Monday, April 4, for doubleheader action. These results were not available at The Herald’s press time.
