Obituary: Delores Metzger

Delores J. (Dee) Metzger, 80, of Peoria, Ill., died March 25, 2022, at Apostolic Christian Skylines in Peoria, Ill.

She was born April 11, 1941, in Sabetha to Phillip and Bertha (Affolter) Metzger.

Dee gave her life to the Lord in 1957 and enjoyed the fellowship wherever she was, especially singing and playing the piano. The Metzger family loved singing.

Dee graduated from Sabetha High School in 1959. She grew up working in the family restaurant – the Metzger Café – in Sabetha. Upon graduation from high school, she lived and worked in Topeka. Then, she moved and worked in Wichita, and finally moved to Peoria, Ill., in 1967 when she began her long, dedicated and rewarding career at Heights Finance until she retired in 2003.

Upon retirement, Dee enjoyed volunteering with the Berean Prison Ministries and the Apostolic Christian HarvestCall Child Sponsorship program.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Eldon Metzger, Ronald Metzger and James Metzger; and sisters, Mary Knobloch and Barbara Edelman.

Survivors include brother, Clayton (Jean) Metzger of Canby, Ore.; sisters, Phyllis Banwart of West Bend, Iowa, Carol (Doug) Moser of Sabetha and Cheryl Metzger of Sabetha; sisters-in-law, Sherrill Metzger (Charlie Byrd) and Jean Metzger; brother-in-law, Dale Knobloch; a number of nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews, who she loved dearly. She is also survived by her long-time housemate May Meister, and special friends Jeremy and Elizabeth Calame and their children.

Her funeral was held Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at the Apostolic Christian Church in Peoria, Ill., where ministers of the church officiated.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff and her caregivers at Apostolic Christian Skylines. Memorial contributions may be made to Apostolic Christian Skylines or Berean Prison Ministries.
