Jays drop pair to Panthers

The Sabetha Bluejay baseball squad traveled to Royal Valley on Monday, April 4, to play a doubleheader against the Panthers. The Jays carried a 4-0 record with them, but the Panthers captured both games, 11-1 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap.

Game one

Sophomore Christian McAfee was on the mound for the Jays and pitched three innings. McAfee surrendered 10 runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Junior Jonathan Renyer pitched the fourth inning for the Jays and gave up one run on two hits with one strikeout. The Jay defense committed four errors in the contest.

The Jays jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but were held scoreless for the rest of the game. The Jays only managed five hits with senior Tristan Wittwer picking up two of them. Wittwer had a double and an RBI in the contest.

Game two

In the nightcap, the Jay bats came to life as they outhit the Panthers, 8-5. The Jays held a 2-1 lead after three innings, but the Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish. Once again, the Jays were plagued by errors, as they committed four.

Sophomores Marcus Bauman and Christian McAfee each had a pair of hits, with McAfee belting a triple and knocking in two runs. Wittwer got the starting nod for the Jays and pitched four innings, allowing three runs on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. Sophomore Chase Frey came on in relief for the final two innings and allowed no runs with no hits or walks and recorded two strikeouts.

“We competed at times in both games, we just need to continue to find some consistency in all aspects of the game,” said Head Coach Curtis Hamilton. “Pitching, defense, and hitting has been up and down and against a good team like Royal Valley that is going to catch up with you. The first game we had a rough defensive inning we gave up nine runs but we were competitive in the other innings. Game two was a great competitive game but we made a few mistakes that cost us. We have a great group that’s going to work hard throughout the season to improve and with that our consistency will come.”

The Bluejays traveled to Holton on Monday, April 11, for doubleheader action. These results were not available at The Herald’s press time.
