Thirteen Bluejay athletes earn postseason honors

Thirteen 2021-22 winter sport athletes from Sabetha High School have earned Big 7 League and/or All State Honors.

Those named with All League or All State Honors are listed below, as well as team and individual achievements for the 2021-22 winter season.

Wrestling

The Bluejay grapplers opened their season on Dec. 4, 2021, in Wamego, and concluded their season by sending eleven grapplers to the State Championships. Ten boys – senior Kellen Menold; juniors Josh Herrmann, Jonathan Renyer, Kellan Spielman and Jacob Kuenzi; sophomores Cullen Wikle, Colin Menold, Josh Grimm and Dalton Rokey; and freshmen Caleb Renyer – qualified for the 3-2-1A State Championship Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25 and 26, in Hays, while freshman Nakita Lawrence competed in the Girls Wrestling Championship in Salina on Feb. 23.

During the boys’ season, the Bluejay wrestlers earned first place at the Sabetha Tournament, the Rossville Dual Tournament and the Regional Tournament; and second place at the Republic County Invitational, Rossville Tournament, Maryville, Mo., Tournament, and at the Big 7 League Tournament.

Kellen Menold

Senior

All State Honorable Mention

Kellen, 113 pounds, finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 31-10. During the 2021-22 season, he placed third at the Big 7 League Tournament and second at Regionals. His Regional placing qualified him for the 3-2-1A State Championship. Then, he placed sixth at State.

Josh Herrmann

Junior

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention

Josh, 170 pounds, finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 27-13. During the 2021-22 season, he placed second at the Big 7 League Tournament, as well as Regionals. His Regional placing qualified him for the 3-2-1A State Championship.

Jacob Kuenzi

Junior

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention

Jacob, 182 pounds, finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 17-19. During the 2021-22 season, he placed second at the Big 7 League Tournament and third at Regionals. His Regional placing qualified him for the 3-2-1A State Championship.

Cole Hinton

Sophomore

Big 7 All League

Cole, 145 pounds, finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 30-12. During the 2021-22 season, he placed first at the Big 7 League Tournament.

Jonathan Renyer

Junior

All State Honorable Mention, Big 7 All League

Jonathan, 152 pounds, finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 38-12. During the 2021-22 season, he placed first at the Big 7 League Tournament, as well as Regionals. His Regional Championship qualified him for the 3-2-1A State Championship. Then, he placed sixth at State.

Josh Grimm

Sophomore

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention

Josh, 285 pounds, finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 25-18. During the 2021-22 season, he placed second at the Big 7 League Tournament, as well as Regionals. His Regional placing qualified him for the 3-2-1A State Championship.

Colin Menold

Sophomore

Big 7 All League

Colin, 132 pounds, finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 39-7. During the 2021-22 season, he placed first at the Big 7 League Tournament, as well as Regionals. His Regional Championship qualified him for the 3-2-1A State Championship.

Dalton Rokey

Sophomore

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention

Dalton, 195 pounds, finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 30-16. During the 2021-22 season, he placed second at the Big 7 League Tournament and third at Regionals. This qualified him for the 3-2-1A State Championship.

Cullen Wikle

Sophomore

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention

Cullen, 126 pounds, finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 35-13. During the 2021-22 season, he placed second at the Big 7 League Tournament and first at Regionals. His Regional Championship qualified him for the 3-2-1A State Championship.

Boys’ Basketball

The Bluejays opened their season on Dec. 3, 2021, against Marysville and wrapped up the season on Saturday, March 5, against Royal Valley in the Sub-State Championship game. The Bluejays placed third at their mid-season tournament in Burlington, when they defeated Rock Creek and Burlington, but fell to Labette County. Then, the Bluejays lost in the Sub-State Championship game against the Panthers, 54-23, and finished their season with an 18-5 record.

Throughout the 2021-22 season, the Bluejays tallied 1,179 points, 714 rebounds, 286 assists and 155 steals.

Matthew Garber

Junior

Big 7 All League, Sports in Kansas All State 3A Honorable Mention, Kansas Basketball Coaches Association All State Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2021-22 season, Matthew totaled 322 points, 76 rebounds, 65 assists and 45 steals. He shot 49.54 percent from two-point range, 29.58 percent from the three-point range and 75.86 percent from the free throw line.

Davis Rokey

Junior

Big 7 All League, Sports in Kansas All State 3A Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2021-22 season, Davis totaled 277 points, 182 rebounds, 35 assists and 35 steals. He shot 50 percent from two-point range, 43.75 percent from the three-point range and 60.32 percent from the free throw line.

Girls’ Basketball

The Lady Jays opened their season on Dec. 3, 2021, against Marysville and wrapped up the season against the Nemaha Central Thunder on March 1 in the first round of Sub-State. The Lady Jays finished their season with an 9-12 record. Throughout the 2021-22 season, the Lady Jays tallied 745 points, 516 rebounds, 183 assists and 196 steals. As a team, the Lady Jays shot 34.99 percent from the two-point range, 22.78 percent from the three-point range and 50.57 percent from the free throw line.

Emily Krebs

Senior

Big 7 All League, Sports in Kansas All State 3A Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2021-22 season, Emily totaled 161 points, 71 rebounds, 88 assists and 44 steals. She shot 39.51 percent from two-point range, 22.5 percent from the three-point range and 58.9 percent from the free throw line.

Mary Lukert

Junior

Big 7 All League, Sports in Kansas All State 3A Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2021-22 season, Mary totaled 188 points, 97 rebounds, 35 assists and 40 steals. She shot 41.49 percent from two-point range, 21.01 percent from the three-point range and 61.4 percent from the free throw line.
