Jays capture pair from Tigers

The Jefferson West Tigers paid a visit to Somerset Park for a pair of games on Thursday, April 21, and the Jays sent the Tigers back home with a pair of losses. The Jays swept the doubleheader winning the first game in a close contest, 2-1, and the nightcap game, 7-4.

Game one

In the opening game, the Jays sent sophomore Christian McAfee to the mound and McAfee pitched a gem of a game. McAfee pitched seven innings in picking up the victory and allowed the Tigers just four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts while allowing just one run on 105 pitches.

The Jays scored one run in the bottom of the second inning and one in the bottom of the third inning, and that would be all they would need to hold on for the 2-1 victory. Hits were hard to come by for both teams in the game and the Jays were helped by five errors committed by the visitors.

Game two

In the second game, the Jays had nine hits and used a three run fifth inning to hold off the Tigers for the 7-4 win.

Juniors Josh Herrmann, Jonathan Renyer and Nohl Niehues went two for three at the plate with an RBI to lead the offensive attack for the Jays.

The Jays threw four pitchers at the Tigers with Herrmann getting the ball to open the game. Herrmann responded by pitching four innings and allowing only one run on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore Jacob Grimm pitched the fifth inning and gave up a pair of runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Junior Matt Garber came out for the sixth inning and allowed no runs and no hits with three walks and one strikeout. Freshman Mitchell Kramer closed out the game for the Jays in the seventh inning, allowing just one run on a pair of hits with one walk and one strikeout.

The Jays welcomed Riverside to town on Monday, April 25. These results were not available at The Herald’s press time.
