Red Hawks take pair from Jays

The Sabetha Bluejay baseball team traveled to Hiawatha on Thursday, April 28, for doubleheader action with the Red Hawks. The Red Hawks defeated the Jays in both games. The Jays took a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning of the first contest, but gave up four runs in the bottom of the inning and eventually fell, 4-3. In the second game of the day, the Red Hawks once again used a big fifth inning to put the Jays in a hole they could not recover from and fell, 10-4.

Game one

In the opening game, the Jays sent senior Tristan Wittwer to the mound and Wittwer pitched five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with six walks and four strikeouts. Sophomore Chase Frey came on in relief and faced three batters, allowing one hit with two walks, before sophomore Will Ulrich closed out the sixth inning with a pair of strikeouts.

The Jays had seven hits in the game with sophomore Christian McAfee leading the attack going two for three at the plate with an RBI.

Game two

In the nightcap, the Red Hawks jumped out early and held a 3-2 lead going into the fifth inning, but the Jays tacked on two runs in the top of the inning to take a 4-3 lead. Things unraveled in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Jays as the Red Hawks crossed the plate seven times to put the game away.

The Jays were charged with five errors in the game. Sabetha pounded out 11 hits in the contest, but only managed four runs. Junior Josh Herrmann led the attack, going three for three at the plate. McAfee continues to swing the bat well, going two for four with an RBI. Junior Matthew Garber also had a good night at the plate, going two for three and a walk.
