Jays sweep twin bill with Dragons

The Wilson Dragons paid a visit to Somerset Park on Monday, May 9, for doubleheader action with the Sabetha Bluejays. The Jays won both games in dominant fashion.

Game one

In the opening game, the Jays ended the game after the top of the third inning after building a 25-0 lead with a 25-run outburst in the bottom of the second inning. The Dragons – in their first year of competitive baseball – committed nine errors in the game.

The Jays pounded out 15 hits in the game. Senior Tristan Wittwer led the onslaught going two for three at the plate with a double and a home run and four RBIs. Junior Matt Garber and sophomore Christian McAfee had three RBIs apiece and both had two hits in the contest. Junior Nohl Niehues also collected a pair of hits for the Jays and crossed the plate three times in the inning.

McAfee was on the mound for the first inning for the Jays and struck out three batters. Garber pitched the final two frames for the Jays and gave up no runs and one hit with four walks and four strikeouts.

Game two

In the second game, the Jays exploded for 17 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Then, they followed that with three in the bottom of the second to end the game after the top of the third inning with a 20-1 lead.

The Jays pounded out 14 hits in the game and were once again aided by five Dragon errors. Sophomore Aiden Lang had a big day at the plate going three for three with three RBIs. Sophomore Chase Frey and junior Jonathan Renyer each collected three RBIs and two hits apiece to lead the attack.

Lang was on the mound for the Jays and pitched two innings, allowing one run on one hit with one walk and three strikeouts. Junior Nathan Voos closed out the game for the Jays and allowed no runs on one hit with one strikeout.
