Lady Jays fall in doubleheader match-up against the Thunder

After the weather canceled the game the week prior, Sabetha finally hosted their county-rivals – the Nemaha Central Thunder – for doubleheader action on Monday, May 9.

Nemaha Central would come out on top in both games, 13-4 in game one and 18-14 in game two.

Game one

The Sabetha Lady Jays didn’t pack enough punch in game one against rival Nemaha Central.

Junior Katelyn Poe started at the mound for Sabetha, but struggled holding Nemaha Central’s power hitters from placing the ball deep in center aided by a strong south wind. Sophomore Alexia Hayden finished the game after an injury with Poe.

Sabetha fell short trailing in the fourth, 6-4, and couldn’t produce another run. Sabetha gave up five runs in the fifth on two errors and two in the seventh. After seven innings, Seneca came out victorious, 13-4.

“They got their hits when they needed them,” said Coach Clayton Tennal. “Ours were spread out a little thinner despite multiple hits by junior Mikenna Haverkamp and freshman Erin Boltz.”

Game two

Sabetha fell behind early as sophomore pitcher Alexia Hayden was struggling with her change-up.

“Her change-up is her most powerful weapon,” Coach Tennal said. “It wasn’t on target, which gave Seneca opportunities to score early.”

Down 6-0 until the fourth, Sabetha cut the lead in half, 6-3. In the fifth after a pitching change, freshman Bayleigh Stahl had her first varsity opportunity. Sabetha found themselves down 11-3 in the fifth when their bats came alive.

“Multiple hits in a row will get you runs,” Coach Tennal said.

Six girls drove in runs with seven runs scored. Sabetha was back in the game trailing, 11-10. The last two innings with both teams scoring the final became 18-14 with Nemaha Central on top.

“What we can take from this game is that we can play with anyone,” Coach Tennal said.
