Lady Jays take third, boys get fifth at Big 7 League meet
The Sabetha Track Teams competed at the Big 7 League Track Meet here in Sabetha on Thursday, May 12.
The Lady Jays finished with 90.5 points beating five other teams. The boys earned 68 points getting fifth place.
“We performed about as well as we could have, again having several athletes record season and career bests. This especially is the time of year we like to see that happen,” said Head Coach David Remmers. “The Regional meet is Friday, and we are looking forward to more improvement this week and trying to get as many kids qualified for state as possible.”
Boys

Senior Tyrese Bishop had a big-time day finding himself crossing the finish line first in both the 800- and 1600-meter race. Bishop had a time of two minutes, five seconds in the 800. Then, recorded a personal record in the mile run in four minutes, 45 seconds. Sophomore Kalvin Evans also contributed points for the Bluejays in the two-mile race, finishing in third with a time of 10 minutes, 46 seconds.
Freshman Tyse Frazee left the meet with two personal records, finishing fifth in the 110-meter hurdles and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. The 4×800-meter relay team took third place with a time of nine minutes, one second. Included on that team was T. Bishop, K. Evans, Brody Deters and Nate Menold.
Sophomore Joshua Grimm made an impact in the throwing events, finishing in third place in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 11 inches. In the discus competition, he launched it for 146 feet, 7 inches, which was a personal record and earned him second place. Junior Nohl Niehues also got a personal record in the triple jump with a leap of 40 feet, seven inches, which earned him a third-place finish.
Girls

Junior sprinter Mary Lukert stamped a personal record in the 100-meter dash, earning third place. Then, she also came in third place in the 400-meter dash. Sophomore Leah Lukert also gave the Lady Jays some points, receiving third place in the 800-meter dash, and then second place in the one-mile run. The young guns in the 3200-meter race gave a great effort. Laura Metzger got third place with Lauren Bowles behind her in fourth.
The Lady Jays earned a couple of silver medals in the 4×800 and 4×400 relay. The 4×800 team included L. Lukert, L. Metzger, Audrey Herrmann and Aubrey Schmelzle. The 4×400 team members are McKenna Gatz, A. Schmelzle, M. Lukert, and L. Lukert.
Junior Halle Scoby recorded two personal records in the shot put and discus throw. In the shot put, she finished in fourth place with a throw of 32 feet, 4.5 inches. Scoby was at the top of the podium with her first-place discus throw of 120 feet, 6 inches. Olivia Saner earned second place in the pole vault, clearing a height of 9 feet, 6 inches.
The track teams will compete in the Regional track meet this Friday, May 20, at Royal Valley.
