Twenty-two Bluejay athletes earn post-season honors

Athletic Honors

Twenty-two 2022 spring sport athletes from Sabetha High School have earned Big 7 League and/or All State Honors. Those named with All League or All State Honors are listed below, as well as team and individual achievements for the 2022 spring season.

Track and Field

The Sabetha High School Bluejay track and field teams concluded the season at the State Track and Field Championships held Friday and Saturday, May 27-28, in Wichita. The Jays medaled in five events at state and each state qualifier brought home hardware from the meet. The Jays competed in 10 meets, including State.

Olivia Saner

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention Pole Vault, All State Honorable Mention Pole Vault

In the pole vault, Saner placed first in five meets and second in two meets. Her best vault of 10 feet was achieved at Riverside.

In the 100-meter dash, Saner placed first at one meet and third at two meets. Her best time of 13.14 seconds was achieved at Jackson Heights.

In the 4×100-meter relay, Saner’s team placed second at one meet. Their best time of 56.06 was achieved at the Big 7 League meet.

Big 7 All League 800-Meter Run, Big 7 All League 1600-Meter Run, All State Honorable Mention 4×800-Meter Relay Team

In the 400-meter run, Bishop placed first at one meet and second in one meet. His best time of the season was 54.49 at St. Marys.

In the 800-meter run, Bishop placed first in four meets, second in one meet and third in two meets. He placed sixth at State with a time of 2:04. His best time of the season was 2:01.57 at Regionals.

In the 1600-meter run, Bishop placed first in three meets and third in one meet. His best time of 4:45.78 was achieved at the Big 7 League meet.

Bishop was a member of the 4×400-meter relay team that placed second in three meets and third in two meets. Their best time of 3:44.14 was achieved at the Big 7 League meet.

Bishop also was a member of the 4×800-meter relay team that placed first in one meet, second in one meet and third in three meets. Their best time was 8:32.15, which was achieved at Regionals. The team placed seventh at the State Tournament with a time of 8:41.

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention Discus, All State Honorable Mention Discus

In the discus, Scoby placed first in three meets, second in three meets and third in one meet. Her best throw of 120 feet, six inches was achieved at the Big 7 League meet. Scoby competed at the State tournament and placed eighth with a throw of 111 feet.

In the javelin, Scoby placed second at one meet. Her best throw of 88 feet, 10 inches was achieved at Royal Valley.

In the shot put, Scoby placed second at two meets. Her best throw of 32 feet, 4.5 inches was achieved at Big 7 League meet.

In the 100-meter dash, Lukert placed first in one meet and third in one meet. Her best time of the season was 12.8 seconds at the Big 7 League meet.

In the 200-meter dash, Lukert placed first in two meets, second in two meets and third in three meets. Her best time of the season was 26:61 seconds at Royal Valley.

In the 400-meter dash, Lukert placed first in four meets and third in one meet. Her best time of the season was 1:03.03 at Regionals.

In the 4×100 meter relay, Lukert’s team placed second in one meet. Their best time of 55.42 seconds was achieved at Riverside.

In the 4×400 meter relay, Lukert’s team placed first in two meets, second in one meet and third in three meets. Their best time of 4:24.24 was achieved at the Big 7 League meet.

In the 4×800-meter relay, Lukert’s team placed first in five meets. Their best time of 10 minutes, 16.59 seconds was achieved at Regionals. Lukert’s team also qualified for the State meet. They placed fifth at State with a time of 12:54.

In the 800-meter run, Lukert placed first in two meets, second in two meets and third in three meets. Her best time of 2:34.0 was at Holton.

In the 1600-meter run, Lukert placed first in one meet, second in one meet and third in two meets. Her best time of 5:50.75 was at Nemaha Central.

In the 4×400-meter relay, Lukert’s team placed first in two meets, second in one meet and third in three meets. Their best time of 4:24.24 was achieved at the Big 7 League meet.

In the 4×800-meter relay, Lukert’s team placed first in six meets and second in one meet. Their best time of 10 minutes, 16.59 seconds was achieved at Regionals. Lukert’s team also qualified for the State meet. They placed fifth at State with a time of 12:54.

All State Honorable Mention 4×800 Relay Team

Throughout the season, Evans competed on the 4×800-meter relay team and placed first in one meet, second in two meets and third at three meets. Their best time was 8:32.15, which was achieved at Regionals. He ran on the 4×800-meter relay team at State and placed seventh with a time of 8:41.

In the 3200-meter run, Evans placed first at three meets, second at one meet and third at three meets. His best time of the season was 10:32.69.

Throughout the season, Menold competed in multiple events, but on the 4×400 meter relay team, his team earned second at three meets and third in two meets. Their best time was 3:44.14 at the Big 7 League Tournament.

For the 4×800-meter relay, his team placed first in one meet, second in two meets and third in four meets. Their best time was 8:32.15, which was achieved at Regionals. The team placed seventh at the State Tournament with a time of 8:41.

In the 800-meter run, Menold also placed second at one meet. His best time of the season was 2:18.65.

In the 400-meter dash, Schmelzle placed second in two meets and third in two meets. Her best time of 106.8 was achieved at Holton.

In the 4×400 meter relay, Schmelzle’s team placed first in two meets, second in one meet and third in three meets. Their best time of 4:24.24 was achieved at the Big 7 League meet.

In the 4×800-meter relay, Schmelzle’s team placed first in five meets and second in one meet. Their best time of 10:16.59 was achieved at Regionals. Schmelzle’s team also qualified for the State meet. They placed fifth at State with a time of 12:54.

In the long jump, Schmelzle placed first in one meet and second in one meet. Her best jump of 16 feet, 3 inches was achieved at the Big 7 League meet.

In the high jump, Schmelzle placed second in one meet. Her best jump of 4 feet, 6 inches was achieved at Riverside.

In the 4×100-meter relay, Gatz’s team placed second in two meets. Their best time of 55:42 seconds was achieved at Riverside.

In the 4×400-meter relay, Gatz’s team placed first in two meets, second in one meet and third in three meets. Their best time of 4:24.24 was achieved at the Big 7 League meet.

In the 3200-meter run, Metzger placed first at four meets and third at two meets. Her best time of 12:43 was achieved at Regionals. She also qualified for the State meet. She placed 10th at State with a time of 12:54.

Metzger was a member of the 4×800-meter relay team. Her team placed first at seven meets and second at one meet. Their best time of 10:16.59 was achieved at Regionals. Metzger’s team also qualified for the State meet. They placed fifth at State with a time of 12:54.

In the 800-meter run, Herrmann placed third at one meet. Her best time of the season of 2:53.31 was achieved at Riverside. 

In the 4×800-meter relay, Herrmann’s team placed first at four meets and second at one meet. Their best time of 11:07 was achieved at Holton.

All State Honorable Mention 4×800 Relay Team

Throughout the season, Deters competed in multiple events, but on the 4×400-meter relay team, his team earned second at three meets and third in two meets. Their best time was 3:44.14 at the Big 7 League Tournament.

For the 4×800-meter relay, his team placed first in one meet, second in two meets and third in four meets. Their best time was 8:32.15, which was achieved at Regionals. The team placed seventh at the State Tournament with a time of 8:41.

To earn All State, track and field athletes must place in the top two at State. To earn All League, athletes must place first at League. To earn All League Honorable Mention (HM), athletes must place second at League. All statistics are according to The Sabetha Herald’s records.

 

 

Golf

The Sabetha High School Bluejay golf team opened their season at Wamego on Tuesday, April 5, and concluded their season at the State Golf Tournament on Monday, May 23. Sabetha sent two golfers – Roman Scoby and Dalton Rokey – to the State Tournament in Salina. Roman finished the State Tournament with a score of 89 and Dalton finished with a score of 95. Throughout the season, the Bluejays placed first at the Sabetha Invitational and at the Big 7 League Tournament; second at Nemaha Central Quad; and third at the Nemaha Central Invitational and the Marysville Invitational.

Throughout the 2022 season, Whittaker placed fourth at the Big 7 League Tournament; fifth at the Marysville Invitational; and seventh at the Sabetha Invitational and the Nemaha Central Quad. His best score of the season – 83 – came during the Marysville Invitational.

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2022 season, Rokey placed sixth at the Sabetha Invitational and the Big 7 League Tournament. He also tied for 11th at the Regional Tournament, which earned him a trip to the State Tournament. His best score of the season – 82 – came during the Nemaha Central Invitational.

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention

Throughout the 2022 season, Grimes placed seventh at the Big 7 League Tournament. His best score of the season – 84 – came during the St. Marys Invitational.

Softball

The Sabetha High School Bluejay softball team opened their season on Monday, March 28, against Pleasant Ridge and closed their season in the first round of the Regional Tournament against Silver Lake.

The Lady Jays finished their season, 7-14. Throughout the 2022 season, the team went 199-512 at the plate, all while tallying 142 runs and 114 RBIs, and striking out 132 times.

Throughout the 2022 season, Haverkamp tallied 45 at bats, 11 runs, 16 hits and 13 RBIs, all while striking out 16 times.

Throughout the 2022 season, Hayden tallied 64 at bats, 24 runs, 28 hits and 13 RBIs, all while striking out just 10 times. Hayden pitched 43-2/3 innings. While at the mound, she threw 716 pitches and struck out 47 batters.

Big 7 All League Honorable Mention Infielder

Throughout the 2022 season, Boltz tallied 60 at bats, 16 runs, 23 hits and 11 RBIs, and struck out just nine times.

 

 

 

Baseball

The Sabetha High School Bluejay baseball team opened their season on Monday, March 28, against Pleasant Ridge and closed their season in the first round of the 3A State Championship against Columbus. The team fell to Columbus, 5-4, in the first State Championship game. The Bluejays went 15-8 on the season. The team went 192 of 588 at the plate, all while tallying 143 RBIs and 182 runs, and striking out 134 times.

Throughout the 2022 season, Herrmann had 63 at bats, 10 runs and 21 hits, all while driving in seven RBIs. He also only struck out nine times. Herrmann took the mound for 16 innings. While at the mound, he threw 343 pitches. He struck out 19 batters.

Throughout the 2022 season, Renyer had 56 at bats, 11 runs and 22 hits, all while driving in 12 RBIs. He also only struck out 16 times. Renyer took the mound for four innings. While at the mound, he threw 75 pitches and struck out four batters.

Throughout the 2022 season, Bauman had 69 at bats, 20 runs and 22 hits, all while driving in 13 RBIs. He also only struck out 10 times. Bauman took the mound for three innings. While at the mound, he threw 64 pitches. He struck out four batters.

Throughout the 2022 season, McAfee had 63 at bats, 17 runs and 24 hits, all while driving in 21 RBIs. He also only struck out 10 times. McAfee took the mound for 31 innings. While at the mound, he threw 561 pitches. He struck out 33 batters.
