Raptors split doubleheader with Hiawatha

The Raptors hosted Hiawatha for a double scoop on Friday, July 8, as they moved closer to the final stretch of the season. Sabetha was blanked in the first two innings of game one before they kick-started their offense in third to post five runs and build a 5-2 lead. They never looked back to take the victory, 8-3. In game two, the Raptors’ bats went cold, marking on two hits, and their offense sputtered to be shutout 6-0 to Hiawatha.

Game one

Sabetha fell behind 1-0 in the opening inning of play when Hiawatha plated one runner after a pair of base hits, a wild pitch and a passed ball. That was minimal damage and the Raptors closed out the rest of the inning without allowing anymore runs to score.

In the third inning, lead-off hitter Turner Howard was hit by a pitch, and after a walk, a fielder’s choice and a Darrin Funk single, Howard knotted the score at one apiece. Sabetha would plate four more runs on a series of Hiawatha errors and a walk, in addition to singles Josh Herrmann and Jacob Grimm. At the end of the third, Sabetha led, 5-2.

Hiawatha added a run in the fourth to help close the scoring gap, but Aidan Lang would score in the sixth, with Will Ulrich and Herrmann adding a pair of runs in the seventh to help cinch the win for Sabetha, 8-3. The Raptors tallied eight runs on nine hits on the night, with Grimm hitting two of three with two RBIs, Ulrich going two for four and Howard connecting on one of two with an RBI.

Herrmann started on the hill to take the win and allowed three runs on six hits, gave up six free bases and struck out five in his 4-1/3 innings at work. Ulrich closed the game pitching 2-2/3 innings, allowing only one hit but no runs, fanning one batter and giving up one walk.

Game two

After taking the victory in the first game of the night, the Raptors could not get their offensive machine moving in the nightcap. Herrmann attempted to spark his team in the first inning with a fly ball single to left field, but it was not contagious enough and they managed only two hits for the game. Sabetha would be blanked by Hiawatha, 6-0, in the five inning contest.

Herrmann was one for two and Jonathan Renyer had a single in his one appearance at the plate. Jacob Grimm gave up four runs on six hits in his three innings on the mound, fanning two and giving up three walks. Harper Schmelzle was the closing hurler for the Raptors and threw two innings, allowing two runs on one hit, striking out three and walking three.
