Raptors bring out the broom against Seneca

On Tuesday, July 12, the Raptors traveled to Seneca to take on their league opponent, with Sabetha leading the series 2-1 over. Sabetha tallied 12 runs on 10 dings in the opener, with six of those runs coming in the top of the seventh, winning the game convincingly, 12-3. In the closing game of the night, the Raptors put Seneca to bed early with an abbreviated, five-inning game, scorching their opponent on the road, 9-2.

Game one

Both teams marked a single hit in the first inning, but neither could bring a runner into score. Sabetha’s Jonathan Renyer had a flyball single to center to get himself on base, and Noah Kroll had an RBI single on a 1-0 count to bring Renyer around to score. Sabetha led 2-0 at the end of two innings.

In the top of the fifth, Kroll would score his team’s only run when he hit into a fielder’s choice and came around to score on a passed ball, a wild pitch and a balk. The Raptors plated three runs on three hits in the top of the sixth to extend their lead 6-0 heading into the final inning.

Sabetha batted through the order in the top of the seventh, scoring six runs on three base hits and one double to add plenty of insurance to their lead. Seneca scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the damage was insurmountable and the Raptors took the easy victory, 12-3.

Christian McAfee had a big night on the hill, taking the win hurling 6-2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out eight and walking five. Harper Schmelzle closed out the game pitching 1/3 of an inning, giving up one run on one hit, striking out one and walking one in relief.

The Raptors racked up 10 hits in the contest, with McAfee hitting two of four with a single and a double while tallying five RBIs. Renyer went two-for-two with an RBI, and Bauman hit two of three. Sabetha committed no errors with notable defensive play going to Josh Herrmann, who accounted for 10 of those plays.

Game Two

After amassing 10 runs in the first game of the night, the Raptors kept their bats warm for the second game. Sabetha heaped nine runs on eight hits to retire Seneca in the nightcap, 9-2.

After a scoreless first inning, the Raptors put up five runs on two hit batsmn, a pair of singles and a bevy of errors in the top of the second. Jonathan Renyer and Noah Kroll both scored on errors, Chase Frey had a basehit, and Aiden Lang had an RBI single, as well as a score on a sac-fly, Harper Schmelze was hit by a pitch and later scored on a RBI single by Josh Herrmann and Sabetha led 5-0.

They added two runs in the third and two in the fourth before giving up two runs to Seneca in the bottom half of the fifth. The Raptors take the road win to close out the night on top, 9-2.

Frey went to the hill to start this contest and takes the win, allowed just one hit and zero runs over four innings, striking out four while walking two. Kroll threw for one inning allowing two runs on two hits.

Herrmann went two of three at the plate, with an RBI and a run scored, and Lang was one of two plating one score. The Raptors finished 4-1 against Seneca in the regular season.
