Business is growing at Bern Café

Charlie Strathman, left, and Jake Niehues, right, are the new owners of Bern Cafe in Bern.

Two local partners with a passion for cooking have revived the Bern Café, and have been busy since the initial opening of the business on May 2, 2022.

Owners Jake Niehues and Charlie Strathman combined their talents and experience together to create a warm and welcoming restaurant for all to enjoy. Charlie — who was born and raised in Seneca — attended Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts, while Jake — who was born in Seneca and raised in Sabetha — has both owned and managed businesses in the past.

“We thought it was a good fit to bring our skill sets together and do something we love,” Jake said.

The duo opened the doors to Bern Café — located at 406 Main Street in Bern — in May after a few months of decision-making and visiting the Bern community.

“We’ve worked together in the past and we both felt after visiting with the Bern community, that Bern was the right place for us,” Jake said. “We wanted to be able to serve Bern and the surrounding areas. Being centrally located between Sabetha, Seneca and Southeast Nebraska communities, we felt it was a great location. Bern had been without a café for about two years, and Bern has a lot of business and employees that benefit from an eating establishment.”

Jake said the goal of their business is to offer a warm environment for all patrons and occasions.

“Our goal is to offer a warm environment, with a large variety of fresh, from scratch, affordable food,” Jake said. “We offer in house dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as catering services. We offer catering services from the large family gathering up to business meetings and large weddings.”

In order to enhance the café’s environment, Jake and Charlie brought in some new equipment and painted the main dining area to give a hometown café style to the business. The business also has multiple televisions with local news and sports, as well as guest WiFi.

“We plan to upgrade floors and seating in the near future,” Jake said.

While the business opened initially in May for breakfast and lunch, the café has recently added evening hours.
