Cardinals force Titans’ fall in first game of district play

With only one loss on the season and that being their home opener, the Cardinals were looking to defend their home turf and attempt to put two consecutive wins together to build a streak. Wetmore welcomed the 1-2 Southern Coffey County Titans to town on Friday, Sept. 23, in another six-man duel in Wetmore.

The Cardinals jumped all over the Titans early and posted 40 points in the first quarter, with senior Jacob Carls posting the first points of the contest when he caught a dart from senior quarterback Kyler Wommack. Carls had a pair of receiving touchdowns on the night.

Wommack threw for two scores, rushed for one, threw completions for three point after attempts and kicked for another.

Senior quarterback Dierk Hanzlicek rushed for four touchdowns and threw for another in the effort against the Titans, and Carls found the end zone twice with a pair of touchdown receptions.

Wetmore led 40-0 at the end of the first quarter and added 19 additional points in the second frame to seal the Titans’ fate with an abbreviated ending to the game. Freshman Landon Heller scored the final tally of the night when he hauled in a 32-yard reception and punched it into the end zone late in the second quarter.

The Cardinals improved to 3-1 on the season with the 59-6 victory at home, and they will look to build onto their streak when they host the 2-2 Altoona-Midway Jets, who are coming off of a 49-0 win over Chetopa in week four.

“It was very nice to get our first home win of the season,” said Head Coach Miles Hanzlicek, “not to mention a very important district win. The guys played a great clean game, except for our extra point kicking game, which we will be concentrating on that this week, there were a lot of points left out there on the field. We were also able to get a lot of snaps for the underclassmen and I’m very happy with how they played.”
